occasionally i realize when
i'm struggling to read
something that the problem is
i'm more interested in the
author than i am his or her
writing... that doesn't
necessarily mean it's
uninteresting writing--just
that the personalities rise to
the surface and distract me.

How about Virginia Woolf and Margaret Atwood to add to your list?
i don't know much about them, but perhaps i'll have to look into it upon your suggestion...
