- Another ridiculously cliche list in a ridiculously cliche series of lists. I'm not going to give these star ratings, as music is totally subjective. A fan of 80's hair metal (and only 80's hair metal) would give Kompakt - Total 4 zero stars, even though it's absolutely fantastic...and that brings me to my list, which just so happens to start with...

- Random observation: Electronic and "indie" (indierock, indiepop: basically pop and rock that don't exist solely to get radioplay) music seems to be bleeding all over the place lately. It's like after 10 years of segregating itself into tinier and tinier microniche semigenres, the whole musical world collectively threw it all up and melted it, then recorded everything that resulted.

Favorites?
lol. Good point - some sort of a rating/genre/explanation system might be called for here...this is currently quite a useless list...
You got all of these off Soulseek? (*gaping in astonishment*)
Most of them, yep (I bought a few really good ones).
The trick is to "room searches" as well as general searches, and search in multiple rooms.
heeey!!!... how is it goin'???... hope everything's ok by wherever you are from... I'm from Chile (everheard???) mmm... hope so... i would like to listen the music you rank... but dunno why, maybe due to my country distance from what i call "the world"... i can only download just a little bit of the items listed (let's say a 50% of the 350 trance songs... and about a 20%!!! of the 2005 albums and mixes :-( The requirement: could it be possible to make a "massive copy-paste" of the music you rank (speccially electronics!!!) by msnmessenger??? mine is fernando.gomez@vtr.net hope to hear from ya' man... take care and thanks... byeeep!!!...
Hmmm...well, that's not really possible...
But try using soulseek. The albums are often very difficult to get even on that program, but adding them to your wishlist should yield some results...eventually.
Glad you you enjoy the music :)
hey dude... thanks... SoulSeek really rocks... neverheard 'bout it before... take care...
Enjoy! :)
What did you think of the Subotnick, Stockhausen, and World's End Girlfriend?
I thought...OW!!!
But they were interesting. Although they didn't get many repeat listens. Truth is (for Stockhausen and Subotnick): I found they were barely music (especially Stockhausen) and while they were fascinating intellectual exercises, they didn't really have much impact. World's End Girlfriend I found too all-over-the-place: andn ot in a good way. I found the tracks just ripped themselves apart and stopped being enjoyable: noise was never my kind of music (why do I really need more of it in my life? I hear enough every day as it is.), and mixing it with other genres does nothing to improve it: all it does is drag those styles down with it.
I really felt the same way about those three as I do about most experimental music***: artistic, interesting, important, and not very enjoyable.
***don't confuse experimental with innovative. Experimental artists try to create new sounds simply for the sake of creating new sounds. Innovative artists make those new sounds into music. For example: Stockhausen is experimental, Kraftwerk is (was?) innovative. I do feel experimental music is neccessary though. But while styles of actual music trickle up from those experiments, it doesn't mean those experiments themselves are all that fun to listen to. Think: While most don't enjoy memorizing equations on electromagnetic fields, electron bending, light diffraction, advanced electronics, and liquid crystal interaction, many people enjoy watching TV. While most people don't enjoy listening to Stockhausen, many people enjoy listening to Orbital.
And there are a huge number of examples of this in musical culture. Mille Plateau's Clicks + Cuts 1 to the entire "microhouse" musical genre. Terry Riley's bizarre drone experiments to Philip Glass and Steve Reich's minimalism. The baroque style of music was simple and strange in the beginning, but it eventually gave way to the classic works of Johann Sebastian Bach. (although there are times where the experimental version is more interesting and fun than the styles to come out of it. Think experimental jazz to smooth jazz.).
I think AJDaGreat and I had a conversation like this once. I emphasized moments of innovation, AJ preferred when these innovations had been worked into a more accessible form. For example, I'm knocked over by Parable of an Arable Land and he might prefer Daydream Nation (an album I also love). Then again, I don't enjoy most Stockhausen (Stimmung is a major exception), but I do enjoy many other artists that use his innovations in a more accessible form, and I look forward to artists that do the same thing with some of his recent innovations that have not been used anywhere else. I do like all the Subotnick I've heard, and I definitely like everything I've heard by Riley, Glass, and Reich.
Does anyone prefer smooth jazz to 60s jazz? I guess someone does, or they wouldn't have smooth jazz radio stations.
(to your smooth jazz question). Anyone who wants to sound intellectual and artsy ("I listen to jazz!") in their musical taste, but doesn't want to put in the effort of understanding real jazz. Basically, it's old rich people pop.
I think both you and AJ are right. Both have their place, but it really just all comes down to preference.
(I'm personally a bell curve. I hate MOR with passion, but I'm not very fond of 8 hour industrial noise washes overlaid with pure sine waves either). BTW Riley, Glass, Reich, and Subotnick are well on the way to being more accessible (if not already there: especially the minimalists): you're probably much the same way with your "preferred innovation level". No, a lot of the pure innovation (read: virtually all) falls under every kind of radar, because it's just so impossible to listen to, Stockhausen being a very rare exception (the radar, not the listenability).
A bit too much Tiesto in there *pulls face lol
I found Thievery Corporation - DJ Kicks a great introduction to World Jazz for someone who primarily likes electro music. Highly recommended album there, since you already have K&D and Erland Oye I suggest you give it a listen ;)
And wow, you listen to a lot.
craaap, I completely missed the fact that this thing was 3 years old... oops.
Haha, yeah. The only album I ever listen to of his now is Forbidden Paradise 3 - which is actually acid trance rather than epic. Oh, and In Search of Sunrise 1 or 2 very occasionally, although I can't actually remember the last time I heard either one - certainly not within this year.
Thievery Corporation - DJ Kicks is not bad, but not a favorite of mine.
