B+ for Accelerate? A pleasant surprise!
Hey, as far as Springsteen goes, I thought The River was really listenable! (Donthurtmedonthurtmedonthurtme...)
There was one song on there that I really loved, though. "You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)." It surprised me because of how much it sounded like the Ramones, and then I learned that Bruce had originally written "Hungry Heart" for the Ramones. Crazy.
And yeah, Accelerate is a very good, fun album. Of the R.E.M. albums I've heard, I still prefer Murmur and Automatic for the People, but Accelerate is definitely good stuff.
(Hey, it's been forever since we've e-mailed!)
I'll never understand you Springsteen haters ;) You may interested to know that the much-ballyhooed Piero Scaruffi gives The River a 9/10, the highest of any Springsteen album.
Glad you enjoyed Accelerate. I've had on repeat all week actually, I'm hooked on it.
Sure has been a while since we e-mailed.. almost certainly my fault, once again I don't think I ever got back to your last one! I'll make an effort to reply ASAP. How's the writing going at the mo?
Ah, Scaruffi, Scaruffi, Scaruffi. I've been to his website a bit recently, and I tell you: The man confounds me. Not because of his standards for music, which are fine and dandy by me, and I actually love a lot of the stuff I've listened to which he rates highly...it's just really hard to put into words.
The writing is going very well! I think I'm around 70 pages into this one, and if I can find time to just sit around and write--what with schoolwork, my annoying yet wonderful social life (which is really pretty scarce), and my general laziness--I should finish hopefully within the next week or so.
I know what you mean about Scaruffi..
Good luck with the writing!
"C+ for The River? Hm could be worse.."
ummmm... only two other albums have received lower grades. Both are by artists I've never heard of. In order to avoid lowering my high opinion of CaptMal I'm going to try to think of this as an April Fool's joke gone horribly, horribly wrong.
Hey! Raheem DeVaughn's dad is Abdul Wadud! How could you give a 'C' to the son of Abdul Wadud?
I must now soothe myself with thoughts of going out on tour with Wadud, Olu Dara, Ravi Shankar, Sathima Bea Benjamin, Abdullah Ibrahim and Buddy Guy when they tour as The Progenitors, which is a band I totally made up.
Haha. Well CaptMal is not exactly the biggest Springsteen fan around (I know, I can't believe it either!), I've found, so C+ is as good as I realistically expected..
Hey now, there are albums I haven't listened to this year which I dislike far more than The River. Like, for example, Clay Aiken's Christmas album, which is one of the worst things I've ever heard.
And, as my man Wezzo says, I am just not big on Springsteen (Nebraska being the exception).
Have you heard Raheem DeVaughn's album? It's so corny it must've been recorded in a field. *rimshot* ;-)
I am honestly unfamiliar with his dad, but boy do I love me some Ravi Shankar.
Cool log man, however as a hardcore Prince fan I have to frown upon your C+ for Dirty Mind. Explain yourself, sir! :-P
Hahaha, well, I dig Prince myself (especially Sign "O" the Times, one of my favorite albums), but Dirty Mind was a little too dance-y for me. All the songs kind of ran together, and it gave me a headache.
But other than that, I definitely like Prince.
Hehe alright fair enough. Your praise of Sign 'O' The Times (possibly my favorite Prince album) will make up for it. :-P
Interesting you mention that the songs on Dirty Mind kinda run together. That's actually one of the reasons I love it. It's just a nice, short-n-sweet album that I can listen to all the way through if I need to kill a half hour, without skipping any tracks. I also feel that it's his first overall great album (his first album left a lot to be desired, and his second one was better but still had a couple missteps).
What other albums of his do you have/like?
The only other ones I've listened to are 1999 and Purple Rain, and I like both of those a lot.
Nice, those are both very good. You should also check out both Diamonds And Pearls and The Love Symbol Album. Both have a bit of filler on them, but they both also contain some of his best work.
Will do!
Would this be your first Mindless album?
It would!
I initially got it just because of the track "Mark David Chapman," being of course intrigued by the title, and ended up loving the album's absolute horny ridculousness.
If you like that album, you'll go nuts for their other stuff. Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy is especially worth your time. ("I Hate Jimmy Page" is probably still their best song.)
Yeah, I definitely want to hear FGWSSS.
"I Hate Jimmy Page"...man, these guys know how to hook you in with a song title.
C+ for The Renaissance?!?!?! Come on man, that's gotta be the best hip hop album I've heard all year!
At times it sounded like a generic soul record to me...
I mean, there were some good raps. But not enough for me to want to hear it again.
Well, to each his own. For me personally, the album was a breath of fresh air for real and soulful hip hop. It took me back to the days of the old classic Tribe joints.
Just out of curiosity, do you tend to download new albums or do you actually go out and buy them?
I download them, as I am a naughty, naughty pirate.
Oh, and I love The Low End Theory. That's actually the only Tribe I've heard.
You should check out all the other Tribe albums too. The last one (The Love Movement) is rather disappointing compared to the others but is still a decent listen. My favorites are The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders.
Yeah, I've heard a lot of good things about Midnight Marauders.
Good call on Voodoo! D'Angelo is tragically underrated and that's one of my favorite albums ever.
Oh, and just an observation: how did that Cold War Kids album go from a A+ to a C+ in just over a month? I'm not at all familiar with the band, it's just something I noticed.
Yeah, I loved Voodoo. It took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I was just sucked in.
As for the Cold War Kids' Loyalty to Loyalty...well, I don't really know myself. The first time I heard it, I absolutely loved it. I didn't think there was anything wrong with it. I went online and found out that everybody else thought it sucked, and was perplexed.
Then just the other day I decided to go back through some of my favorite albums, and that was the first one I threw on. And the lead singer's voice annoyed me so much. Every single song seemed to have the same melody, and not in a cool Kraftwerk way.
I really don't know what to say. That's the first time that's ever happened to me. I don't wanna say that reading people's thoughts online influenced it, as I would like to think that doesn't determine my opinion, and just from past history, it usually doesn't (or if it does, it's in minor ways, like shedding light on something I hadn't noticed before). But I don't know. I think this might be a case of everyone else being right.
All I know is that I hope something like this doesn't happen again, or else I might start questioning my own judgment!
I as well was disappointed with the new Kanye album. To tell you the truth I wasn't expecting much from it, since I knew beforehand it wasn't going to be anything like his previous work. But I thought maybe, just maybe Kanye would come through on the production side of things. He didn't.
You were a lot more generous with your rating than I was.
It was kind of listenable, if forgettable.
But Auto-Tune? Fuck that noise, man...
Word. Auto-Tune blows. I mean, it's at least tolerable if you only have a few songs using it. But an entire album? Getdafuckouttahere!
