I've never been a big fan of Nirvana, but only having heard a few of their songs, I decided it'd only be fair to give an album a shot. The songs have good hooks and some decent lyrics, but overall, nothing stood out or really impressed me. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is an okay song, and the only one on the album that really makes an impression (which might just be because it's been played just about as many times as "Yesterday").

Still, never fair to write an artist off after one album. Granted, everyone considers Nevermind to be their best, but who knows what I'll think? I mean, I enjoy Paul McCartney's Pipes of Peace. Obviously I'm not trying to follow the herd here.

I sort of agree that Nevermind is overrated (though I probably love Smells Like Teen Spirit more than you do), but maybe you should try In Utero.

I personally think Nevermind is their best, but a lot of people like In Utero more.

Though maybe you were already considering listening to that one, since they don't really have a lot of albums :P

i have to say the unplugged set is really good. i mean, the fact that the set was completely "unplugged" is debatable. and i love that they used the program as an opportunity to showcase the work of their influences. those meat puppets tunes are great.

Yeah, after a year or so, it is best to think of the term Unplugged as a show title and not a strict description of the musical offerings...

thats fair enough. I agree that smells like teen spirit is a highlight, but i also think Drain you is a pretty good song that sticks out. well i would suggest you try In utero, it has a more personal , darker tone to it. I also agree with lbangs comment that their Unplugged set is their best work

I didn't get into Sublime until last year, when my uncle introduced me. 40 Oz. to Freedom is currently the only one of their albums that I own, and I definitely love it.

Have you listen to Live at San Quentin?, i think the song selection at Folsom Prison is better, but some of the song perfomances in San Quentin are cooler, i especially like the sort of rock and roll vibe Folsom Prison Blues has in this one, and of course here is A Boy named Sue.

Some time last month I listened to Nirvana's MTV Unplugged in New York and was surprised by how much it got to me, and how powerfully Kurt Cobain came off. I'm not a big grunge fan, and since this was decidedly less grunge-y than anything I'd heard from the band, I was impressed. Impressed enough to dig Nevermind back out and give it another go. I'm glad I did, because I think I really missed the boat on it when I listened to it back in January. I still don't think it's the era-defining masterpiece it's hyped to be, but the music is really excellent and Cobain again is just a powerful persona. Somehow I'd missed the depth and feeling of the music the first time I listened to it, and I'm glad I caught it this time. I think I still like Unplugged the slightest bit more, though.

Other albums I relistened to this week that I similarly misjudged the first time and now like considerably better: Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys, which I'd always liked but also thought of as slight, when in fact it's a beautiful straight pop record; Are You Experienced by the Jimi Hendrix Experience which I actually really liked but am now convinced it's a masterpiece; and At Fillmore East by the Allman Brothers Band which I find fairly unremarkable though enjoyable...still, that's better than when I used to hate it.

Albums I thought might be better than I initially thought but weren't upon review: Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols by the Sex Pistols and A Love Supreme by John Coltrane.

Ah, yes i've had the same sort of experience with the film Jackie Brown lately.

oh man, i'm also glad you enjoyed unplugged, it's my fave nirvana album, as you said kurt did such a powerful vocal performance. i also liked how 6 of the songs on that album were covers, quite a risk for a band as popular as they were, especially since it was unpluged, a theory that would of put a few fans off at best of times let alone doing covers. However they are all brilliantly performed. do you have any Favourite tracks of either album? i really like "Drain You" from Nevermind, and have a special place in my heart for "Oh Me" from unplugged.

Oh i'm glad you like The White stripes too, i had tickets to their tour but they pulled out lol :(!!

Jackie Brown is now one of my favorite movies, but I was slightly disappointed the first time I saw it. Same for Kill Bill: Vol. 2.

Yeah, I dig that Nirvana did whatever they wanted on Unplugged. I'm not entirely sure what my favorite track off of Nevermind is (I'll let ya know the next time I listen to it), but my favorite track on Unplugged is probably "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam." Haven't really listened to it enough to decide yet.

And yeah, the White Stripes are completely awesome and one of the best bands out there right now. It really sucks that they had to cancel all their concerts; I hope Meg's doing all right. But at least a video of "Effect & Cause" is in the works, I think.
