Al Pacino Movies With Rating (Work In Progress)

Tags:
  • The Godfather Trilogy 1972 dir.Francis Ford Copolla(ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT,the story, the sets the acting = sublime. Why have I not watched it before??!!)10/10
  • Scarface 1983 dir. Brian De Palma (Some great iconic moments, some very funny moments too. Two words - Al Pacino!! )(x2) 9/10
  • Dog Day Afternoon 1975 dir. Sidney Lumet (Fantastic film. In my opinion Al Pacino should have won the Oscar for this role, just a great performance. John Cazale plays a good part in this film also. )(x2) 9/10
  • The Panic In Needle Park 1971 dir.Jerry Schatzberg (Excellent. Al Pacino, pre-Godfather, is just fantastic as a heroin addict but whatever happened to co-star Kitty Winn??) 8/10
  • Heat 1995 dir.Michael Mann (An ok film - not my favourite film in the world. Liked the way it built from quite a slow start. Great scene by De Niro & Pacino.) 7/10
  • Serpico 1973 dir.Sidney Lumet(It's excellent!!! :-)) 9/10
  • ...And Justice For All 1979 dir.Norman Jewison(Some quite unexpected funny moments in this film - great scene in a helicopter - hilarious...). 8/10
  • The Insider 1999 dir. Michael Mann(Pacino and Russell Crowe. Not usually a Crowe fan but enjoyed this performance. Very interesting film). 7/10
  • Scent Of A Woman 1992 dir.Martin Brest(Excellent. Easy to see why Pacino won the Oscar for this performance.)(x2) 9/10
  • Donnie Brasco 1997 dir.Mike Newell(A good film. Not usually over-keen on Johnny Depp but he played a good part in this. Pacino was as usual IMHO brilliant!)7/10
  • Any Given Sunday 1999 dir. Oliver Stone (Hmm...it was ok - once someone explained the rules of American Football to me!...Some nice camera work. Pacino was good as was Jamie Foxx. Probably wouldn't watch it twice...) 4/10
  • S1m0ne 2002 dir. Andrew Niccol(I have read several reviews of this that have totally panned it and I can understand why. The Godfather it aint. Pacino is just a little bit too big for this film. However, it did make me laugh in parts and I guess it draws attention to celebrity, media and technology in a basic kind of way. The film is a no-brainer which sometimes is what's required! It'a a PG rated film so no great Pacino rants to be had...) 6/10
  • City Hall 1996 dir.Harold Becker(This film plays like one of them movies you see in the afternoon on TV, on a week day. For me there was no real chemistry between the characters and lacked any kind of spark. The topic was interesting enough - corruption in City Hall but lacked any real depth. I could have lived quite happily without seeing this film). 3/10
  • Author! Author! 1982 dir.Arthur Hiller (I loved this film. Pacino is brilliant in it and I think I smiled my way through most of it - laughed out loud a couple of times too! It is quite a cute film so probably not to everyone's taste - it's not Scarface! It's just a good slightly off-beat film.)(x2) 8/10
  • Looking For Richard 1996 dir.Al Pacino (Really enjoyed this film. I found Pacino's documentry/film entertaining and informative. There are some very good performances from Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Winona Ryder, Penelope Allen and of course Pacino himself as Richard III). 8/10
  • The Recruit 2003 dir.Roger Donaldson (An ok film. One of those that Pacino can play standing on his head. Didn't really blow me away.)(x2) 5/10
  • The Merchant Of Venice 2004 dir.Michael Radford (Beautifully shot and some good performances from an all star cast. Pacino is fabulous as Shylock as is Jeremy Irons as Antonio.) 7/10
  • Carlito's Way 1993 dir.Brian De Palma (Loved this film. Pacino's performance in this is mesmerizing. Sean Penn is excellent too. Great direction from the same guy who brought us Scarface. This would make it into my list of 'favourite Pacino films'.)(x2) 9/10
  • Glengarry Glenross 1992 dir.James Foley (A very good ensemble piece. Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin and Jack Lemmon give stellar performances in this film based on a David Mamet play. There is also a brilliant 10 minute cameo from Alec Baldwin. Loved Pacino's rants at Spacey & Harris. Some very funny moments.)(x2) 7/10
  • Devils Advocate 1997 dir. Taylor Hackford ( A good film. Keanu Reeves & Charlize Theron are both pretty good in this and Pacino's ever so slightly hammy devil is superb(how else do you want the devil to be played? ;-)) Enjoyed it.) 7/10
  • Angels In America 2003 dir.Mike Nichols (Loved this..Fantastic performances from Pacino, Meryl Streep,Emma Thompson and the rest of the cast. Particularly loved the scenes with Streep & Pacino. Covers just about every theme you can think of - love, life, death, sexuality, friendship, religion (it's all there!). It is also slightly off-beat and very funny at times. Really enjoyed it.)9/10
  • Frankie & Johnny 1991 dir. Garry Marshall (This may not be Al Pacino's greatest ever movie but there are some funny moments in it. I found myself grinning at the screen quite often during this film which would probably be found in the category of chick flick...Just can't believe Frankie (Michelle Pfeiffer) held out for so long ;-))...7/10
  • Dick Tracy 1990 dir.Warren Beatty (Brilliant. Great sets, costumes and casting. Loved Pacino as Big Boy Caprice, if it wasn't for his unmistakable voice, I might not have recognised him! Some famous names in this film, notably Dustin Hoffman as Mumbles again almost unregonisable. If you're not into Pacino shouting his head off all over the place (which I obviously am :-)) then don't watch...) 9/10
  • People I Know 2002 dir.Daniel Algrant (Not an entirely bad film. Not the best ever but okay. Al Pacino puts in a good performance as a tired PR man who knows a little too much. Found the ending a bit weak and probably wouldn't include it on my ultimate list (if I did it would be somewhere near the end...)5/10
  • Sea Of Love 1989 dir.Harold Becker (Thriller, with a twist at the end that I personally didn't see coming...Enjoyed it, was good to see John Goodman with Pacino, a pairing which I found interesting and certainly worked on screen. A good film and something of a drool fest pour moi (and other ladies (and maybe some guys)who think the way I do ;-))7/10
  • Two For The Money 2005 dir. D.J. Caruso (There are several more recent Pacino films that don't really make the grade and if I am being honest some of them are quite lame...However, this is not one of them. I found it quite entertaining and enjoyed Pacino's performance in this. It's not his best role ever but certainly worth a look). 6/10
  • Two Bits 1995 dir.James Foley (A lovely little film (only 80 mins). Al Pacino plays the part of 'Grandpa' beautifully & subtely, touching at times and humorous at times. Not giving anything away but it made me cry at the end...Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is great also as his daughter Luisa. The feel of the film seems to lie somewhere between The Godfather and The Wonder Years, if such a thing is possible! Just confirms to me again what a great actor Al Pacino is.)8/10
  • Cruising 1980 dir.William Friedkin (A dark and grim film and what was probably quite a challenging role for Pacino. Set in the gay S&M 'underworld' Al Pacino is a cop undercover searching for a murderer. Can't say it was my favourite, there's certainly not many laughs to be had here. The ending is also quite 'interestingly' unsatisfying. It poses more questions than answers them..This is what, in a strange way makes me want to watch it again...Not one you can forget...) 7/10
  • Insomnia 2002 dir. Christopher Nolan (I enjoyed this film. It was good to see Robin Williams and Al Pacino together. Can't say it's my favourite but definitely worth a look). (x2) 7/10
  • Ocean's 13 2007 dir.Steven Soderbergh (Not particularly a fan of the 'Oceans' films and the only reason I watched this was because Pacino is in it (obviously). It was the usual story - big heist blah blah blah. Slick editing and photography. I felt the best scene was near the beginning with Pacino & Elliot Gould the rest was a bit of a snooze fest. It was, however, good to see Al Pacino with Andy Garcia and Ellen Barkin again. Probably wont ever watch it again...). 5/10
  • 88 Minutes 2008 dir.Jon Avnet (Hmm..It was good to see Al Pacino in something new. It was ok, not the best ever... Pacino was good in it but I just found some of the other actors, how can I put it?... A little bit crap. Also found the film quite corny here and there. It wasn't the worst ever tho.) 3/10
  • Righteous Kill 2008 dir. John Avnet (Deniro & Pacino together again sounds like it would be an 'event' movie...And it would be if they were given decent scripts and a decent plot. I don't fully understand why these two great actors would pick such a movie to star in. Are they both totally broke or desperate to keep in the public eye?? I don't get it. Disappointingly lame). 4/10
