If you've read my comments on the AFI's 100 Funniest Movies list, you know that I've seen every movie on that list. At one point, I was determined to watch all the movies on this list as well, but I have recently decided to give up. Why?, you may ask.
Well, I realized that just because the AFI thinks that a movie is one of the 500 funniest American movies ever made, that doesn't mean the movie is any good. I did an IMDB search of American movies with more than 5 votes (less than 5 votes, and the movie has probably vanished from existence by now), and the search turned up 25,000. That means that of all American movies, 2% were nominated for this list! If you take 50 American movies at random, you'll probably get 1 from the list! I don't like those odds, especially because 25,000 is a very generous number since it includes short films (which weren't eligible), movies made after 1998 (also ineligible), films that aren't trying to be funny (e.g., "The Godfather"), and films that try to be funny but fail miserably (e.g., any Pauly Shore movie).
I think an estimate of all the American movies that aren't short films and at least make a good attempt to be humorous would be no more than 10,000, meaning the AFI takes 5% of that. Wow. Besides, plenty of the movies on this list aren't any good. In fact, a few of the movies on the actual 100 funniest list aren't any good. So I'm just gonna give up on seeing all 500 of these funny movies.
