ABBA shot to fame in the UK after winning the Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo in 1974. They initially found it difficult to follow up their success, but eventually got a foothold in the charts, with SOS giving them their second top-ten hit, followed by three number ones in 1976. More success followed through the late 1970s and in 1980, with ABBA's lyrical and music style maturing. The later singles did not sell as well as the group's earlier work and ultimately, the band split up in 1982.

Lay All Your Love On Me, released in 1981, was the highest (at the time) single to chart that was released on a 12inch record, rather than the standard 7inch.

Dancing Queen and Waterloo were later reissued in 1992 and 2004, the latter for the song's thirtieth anniversary of its Eurovision win.
