Pedro Almodóvar is greater than Martin Scorsese, Terry Gilliam, Francis Ford Coppola, others?
If we're talking about current work, YES!
Well, I guess I can't really comment until I see some of his films :-)
You know what I'm going to say, so I'll wait for you to see Hero to see if you change your mind. :-)
I don't know what you're going to say. What are you going to say?
Zhang Yimou is my vote for the guy to take Almodovar's place. I think he matches up well with most directors whether you consider his whole body of work or just his recent stuff, or weight early stuff vs. recent stuff however you want. But of course this is AAA's list, not mine. :-)
Well...I've never seen a Yimou film...I'm gonna go cry now.
AAA! Good God man! How long have you been a member of Listology?! Have I no influence over your viewing choices whatsoever? C'mon now, you and I are like the only people here that didn't like 21 Grams, so that has to be worth some small modicum of credibility. I know we've had our critical differences, but if you don't find a way to rent To Live soon (not his absolute best, but it's pretty near the top and it's one of the few available on DVD) then I'll give you something to cry about.
:-)
Or I'll just burst into tears myself.
(oh, supposedly Hero comes to theaters this month, but I'm sure Miramax will find a way to botch that.)
I know! It has nothing to do with you! I just have never had a moment that I really felt compelled to see it. I very nearly picked one up quite a few times, but I was always more in the mood for something else!
I'm so sorry, please forgive me!
:-) You know there's nothing to forgive. I was more surprised at your lacuna given the quantity and broad range in movies you watch rather than any apparent lack of influence on my part (mock-outrage, all of it). After all, how much can you trust a guy that liked XXX, however guiltily?
Anyway, go ahead and wait until you're in the mood; don't let me rush you! Or just wait for Hero. I suspect, with your admiration for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, you won't find it difficult to get in the mood.
Do you believe...
...in the small of a woman's back?
...that there ought to be a Constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter?
...in soft core pornography?
...in opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve?
Funny, I really do.
...this moment brought to you by the folks at Bull Durham Tobacco Co. Now back to the game...
Then do you believe in spooks?

I have to say this is a pretty thin list.
Your comeback is that my own list is infinitely thinner since it doesn't exist.
Serious question: what sorts of things would a religion have to get right in order to get it completely right?
That is an interesting question whose answer I'll also await.
