25 Most Overrated Bands of All Time

Tags:
  • 25. Black Sabbath – I don’t know, their music just sucks.
  • 24. Rolling Stones – Great band, but in no way do they deserve to even be considered the best of all time.
  • 23. The Sex Pistols – This is one band I’ve never understood. They’re music sucked, they were only around for two years, and their bassist was known as Sid Vicious. This band has no redeeming qualities! NONE!
  • 22. Wilco – Jeff Tweedy is in two great side projects: The Minus 5 and Golden Smog, neither of which he has a major role in. That said, Wilco is not that good. Summerteeth had the advantage of coming out in 1999 when all of music was dead. It wasn’t good.
  • 21. The White Stripes - If it weren't for the fact that they're the only band to form in the last 7 years of any major significance that has talent, you wouldn't really know of them. They are pretty good, but the fact that there is nobody to compare them against inflates their value.
  • 20. Sonic Youth - Experimentation does not immune a band from this category. They're hit or miss, and they miss about half the time.
  • 19. Eagles - No band coming off a 12-14 year "vacation" deserves such hoorahs, especially when they had only released 1 1/2 good records previously.
  • 18. Beach Boys - They became unpopular with age. They almost never had the material to back them up.
  • 17. Counting Crows - They had a hit. They forgot to fizzle out. Now forget about them.
  • 16. Neutral Milk Hotel - Lyrically, Jeff Mangum is a genius. Musically, he's not that good and almost every guitar rift is stolen. And considering Aeroplane is considered the ultimate indie album, they must be punished.
  • 15. The Strokes - Living proof that the Brits cannot decipher good music from mediocre music regardless of whether it is an American band or a British band.
  • 14. Guns N' Roses - Axl Rose is an anagram for Oral Sex. Guns N' Roses is a synonym for garbage.
  • 13. Billy Joel - Piano Man and Scenes From an Italian Restaurant are good songs, but that's about it. Piano rock was never cool in my book.
  • 12. Bruce Springsteen - Call me crazy, but why do people like him? What has he ever done? Well, other than writing "Because the Night" which Patti Smith morphed into one of the 20 best songs of the decade.
  • 11. Bob Dylan - He's had some good songs, but come on. He's had only 2 good albums in the last 30-someodd years and he's still idolized by god knows how many people.
  • 10. Any Britpop Band - Coldplay, Oasis, The Verve, etc.. These bands aren't that good, were never that good, and will never be that good.
  • 9. Yo La Tengo - The ultimate critics band my ass. They're good, but in no way do they deserve half the hype they receive. So many indie people call them the best band ever. Yeah right.
  • 8. Green Day - They were never good, releasing one album that was alright (Dookie) before reaching the point that they decided "Let's further destroy music and call it American Idiot at the same time!"
  • 7. Led Zeppelin - They had some good songs, but Zep II and IV were horrible. "Stairway to Heaven" is mediocre at best.
  • 6. Radiohead – The Bends was amazing. Then they tried to not make sense and became another over-sensationalized indie fucktard must-have. Plus, they stole their title from the Talking Heads. You better be good if you do that.
  • 5. U2 - Let me first state that Joshua Tree is one of the worst albums of all time. Secondly, Achtung Baby is worse.
  • 4. The Beatles - Oh come on, they really weren't that good.
  • 3. Pink Floyd - Take away Syd Barrett and the "Wish You Were Here" album and you've got the #1 most overrated band of all time. Add those in and you drop to #3.
  • 2. Pearl Jam - Don't make me defend this. I just really find Eddie Vedder annoying.
  • 1. Nirvana - Yes, they were good, but Jesus would have forgotten them after In Utero had Cobain not committed suicide. They weren't that good.

wait, if your saying that white stripes are talented, and that one of the only talented bands today, shown by fact that theres no one else to compare them to, then how can they be overrated? i understand what you mean is that there is no one to compare them with, but well, if thats the case, they must be pretty damn good. i can't see how they're overrated. your basically saying they're overrated cus they're better than everyone else lol (which i agree with btw)

anyway, love to hear your views

I'll reword it. They're good, but they're not the greatest thing ever. They're overrated b/c people think they're so good because their judgement is blinded because almost everything else is utter garbage.

ah ok then , no worries, good list.

What exactly do you like?

"The Beatles - Oh come on, they really weren't that good."- I'd like to hear some more explanation on that.

Love love me do, you know I love you.
No more explanation needed.

Say what you really mean, why don't you..!

I will agree with Green Day. However.. Springsteen? Billy Joel? Bob Dylan? U2? Beach Boys? Nooo..

Just want to throw my two pennies in on this:

while a good band with an exceptionally talented guitarist, The White Stripes are hardly original. They're simply a cross between Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Those bands were around some 30 years ago.

Meh, that's how they started off, but their albums have veered more and more from those influences as time went on. Have you heard Get Behind Me Satan? I haven't heard any Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath songs that sound like The Nurse, Little Ghost, or I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet), just to name a few.

Nope, haven't heard it (didn't like Elephant enough to move on with them), so I'll modify by saying the above only refers to their albums leading up to that one.

Well, you might not like Get Behind Me Satan either, but if you heard it you'd surely think they were a more eclectic duo, whose influences cannot just be summed up by a cross between two classic hard rock bands.

Not that I've heard any Zeppelin or Sabbath songs that sound like It's True That We Love One Another or that echo the sentiments of I Want to Be the Boy to Warm Your Mother's Heart, but certainly as a whole, Elephant is closer to the ZepSab cross than Get Behind Me Satan is. And I personally love Elephant and think there's a lot more to it than just ZepSab, but that's a different story altogether.

White Blood Cells is full of Zep and Sabbath. Elephant too. I'm not a big fan but they're a solid, above average, talented band. White is a great guitarist. Meg fills in what she's gotta do. She reminds me of a less talented version of Mo Tucker, even her singing.

I've heard some songs off Get Behind Me Satan and they sounded pretty good.

Oh, I don't deny that many White Stripes songs sound heavily influenced by Zep and Sabbath, especially pre-GBMS. I'm just saying that I don't agree with pigeonholing them as "simply a cross between Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath." I think they have a good deal more to them than that, including plenty of original touches.

Understood, perhaps I need to hear all of Get Behind Me Satan. Outside of that I haven't heard anything legitimately original in their music, though there is clearly talent and touches of genius in what they do.

aye, but thats what i like about them. i think white stripes are original to some extent, but i think its great credit to them that they can be successful with that style in todays market

yeah and listen to get behind me satan, it rules

Perhaps adding a little "age" to your list, I'd have to go with the Grateful Dead as #1 on the "all-time" list. I heartily agree with you on Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, and Wilco, but I'd have to add Queen (if only Brain's guitar could have covered up Freddy's abhorrent vocal style a little more.)

Wha? Just me??

The Dead aren't really overrated except by their own fans, which on the most part is a small cult following. I never see non-diehards mention them among the better/best bands. Queen was an overlook on my part, but I'm still not sure they'd make my top 25. I actually like Queen.

I agree with the Grateful Dead, I cant even identify any songs of theirs, but Queen? No way man, Freddy Mercury is one of the greatest vocalist of all time, his range is nuts, he is so great he makes other great frontmen look not as great.

whoa i just noticed radiohead is in this list..man, is this just for shock value??

Believe it or not, not everyone finds Radiohead as god's gift to music. IMO, Radiohead has been mediocre scud since The Bends.

Man are they the most overrated band of all time, what the hell is that ok computor about????, its certainly not music.

I don't think I've ever heard any of Radiohead's songs. That's weird. I like Muse tho, and people say they're similar.

Check this list out:

agree with you about Nirvana.

I agree with a lot of these, coldplay are utter overrated garbage, along with U2,radiohead and bob dylan, but where are snow patrol, they should be on the list as they churn out boring crap..the beatles dont belong on here, the WHITE ALBUM was awesome! plus the sex pistols were energetic and their music introduced a new era to the industry.we might never have had the stranglers without them..brill

*Put a couple of best bands in top 10, and say how they are actually not that good without giving a good reason, and see how people call you an elitist...* This list is retarded, just had to register to say that, it is one person's taste of music, which is not significant at all, you don't say which band is overrated, and which is not, if you don't know what you're talking about...Led Zeppelin was so goddman famous for a reason, same with Radiohead, but take Jonas Brothers, KISS, or Miley Cyrus, it's just media, strong media, colors, and makeup...lrn2be not stupid...

I mostly only have problems with Bob Dylan and The Beatles. I can see how they could be over-rated because who could ever live up to the legend people and the press have created for them.

But no need to cheap shot them.

The Beatles started out, yes, with 'Love Me Do' and people enjoyed it. They grew to 'Sgt Peppers' and 'Abbey Road' only 5 years after that. Quite an accomplishment for a band.

Dylan has put out plenty of good albums since the 60's. Dylan fans are almost always die-hard. This kind of lifetime devotion doesn't happen because they haven't yet realized his music isn't good. Of course it's good. Thats WHY so many are devoted. The proof is that, in the end, people still come to listen to him play. These people... are not idiots.

For bands like Coldpay, Green Day, U2, Nirvana- you can kind of attach a movement, a 'cool-kid' type thing that accounts for their fans. But The Beatles and Bob transcend this, from grandma's to little kids to writers to musicians.

Whoever made this list is a fucktardo!!! You have no sense of anything dude...and let me guess you're the messiah...

this list cudnt be more wrong the guy who made this list is a retard who doesnt knw his music and shud leave their opinions to themselves because they dont knw anything about rock music
(btw the joshua tree is 1 of the best albums ever made you just wudnt understand)

i gotta agree with the vast majority of this list. i would probably put the beatles at #1 though. they REALLY are NOT that good! i mean, they have a few pretty good songs but you can count 'em on one hand.

led zeppelin, i agree they are vastly overrated. i actually love a lot of their music. a lot of their songs forgettable, but the ones that ARE good are like.. really, REALLY good. i'd probably take them off of this list, or at least push em way down to 24 or 25.

my opinion on pink floyd is exactly the same as my opinion on led zeppelin, except that their good songs are better than zep's. i would definitely take them off the list.

U2 would be the #1 most overrated, in fact if it were mathematically possible to use negative values in item rank list they would be somewhere around -4,766.

i'm totally with you on pearl jam too. OH GOD, how did they ever even become anything near popular? those guys are so boring, and i think the guitar player only ever learned like 4 chords and then quit lessons. it's either that or he went completely deaf at some point between then and now.

Slagging off Pearl Jam is one thing, but making comments like "i think the guitar player only ever learned 4 chords and then quit lessons" is just ignorant and insulting. If you had a brain in your head then you'd realize that they were popular because of Eddie Vedder's lyrics which were brilliant, the great guitar solos and their melodic brand of Grunge rock which was the most popular genre in the world at the time. They used a hell of a lot more than "4 chords" and if history has taught us anything it is that getting guitar lessons, if anything, decreases your chances of becoming a famous guitarist. I agree with you on The Beatles though!

Let me recap this for a minute..you listes the beatles..led zeppelin..the rolling stones..u2..pink floyd..bob dylan..bruce springsteen..nirvana. if i were to see those names on a list and not know what the lists name was id have to guess the list was greatest artists of all time. After naming all these bands i would love to know what fucking music you listen to. these bands are some of the most influential music that will ever be made. pink floyd? dark side of the moon..on of the highest selling albums ever..the eagles also. the beatles? are you fucking kidding me? they started back in the ealry 60s when that music was actually good. sorry your decades later saying that it sucks now? they made the greatest music of THEIR time not yours..so dont say their overrated because its not the type of music that people like nowadays. i was about to go crazy when i seen led zeppelin..stairway to heaven..actual rock critics(not your dumbass) named this one of the greatest songs ever made..robert plant..one of the greatest singers ever..jimmy page..only few guitarists can say their better..bonham..no one can say their better..and john paul jones..a great fucking bassist..possibly the greatest lineup you can imagine..with almost every album stacked with amazing songs. Nirvana? just because kurt cobain couldnt handle the stress and fame and ended his life doesnt put aside that his music before he died was great. Bob dylan? overrated maybe when you see him live..but his albums and songs are fucking genious..this man is a god among men when it comes to song writing..he is a poet at heart and his songs are magical..there will never be any bands like these again. so i guess if you dont like these then you have nothing to look forward to in life. your dumb ass might as well go jump on the gay train and listen to some rap. you know little about music. peace

I grew up with music between 1955 and 1975. Many great musicians of that era (you list some) made an impact on my daily life. I can't say that about the last 20 years of music and musicians. I find an occasional thread to hold on to, like Devotchka, Alejandro Escovedo and Dianne Reeves, probably because they remind me of the past.

Generic douchebag view on music #1.

your list sucks

So I'm NOT the only one who's fed up with this over-saturation of indie music.

You can not make a list like this. So what music do you listen to? Yeah, The Beatles are overrated and in your opinion all of these artists are, but that's your opinion. What the fuck do you actually listen to? Oh I see, you're a fan of The Talking Heads! Well that's funny because they are in my opinion one of the 10 most overrated bands of all time, if not, THE most overrated band of all time. I also agree with "beernann02" you can't really say that The Beatles are overrated because they made great music for their time, most people nowadays don't actually rate them that high. Coldplay are not overrated, they have plenty of haters for every fan. Same with all of these artists, therefore you can't ever make a list of the most overrated artists ever.

This is perhaps the worst list ever created by man.

You have Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and The Rolling Stones on this list, yet bands like Nickelback and/or Fall Out Boy are nowhere to be found.

To add, your reasoning for each selection is beyond brilliant. Did you receive a paycheck for work like this? If so, I need to work for a site that pays people for submitting half-witted, half-assed, twaddle. Next time, just list the things you feel are overrated, and just say, "Because I said so, okay, jerks!?", as your reasoning.

This is list terrible, mostly because you have Pearl Jam at #2. They get so much hate because of they've been ripped off by bands custom tailored by Record labels, such as Nickelback and Creed. Vedder is a great story teller, and probably has one of the most powerful and distinctive voices of the last 20 years. I'm sorry, but you're just objectively wrong about them.

so basically you compiled a list of the most popular bands and said they all sucked haha. i agree with a few but come on. whoever made this list sounds like the typical " anything mainstream sucks" type of person..ive met a thousand of em. but i will completely agree with the beatles nirvana and u2 (especialy) being on the list.

I can understand why people don't like the beatles:
-They don't have a continous style (i.e. Rolling Stones)
-Ringo only ever performed ONE drum song on a beatles track EVER
-Half their songs don't even resemble rock (Honey Pie sounds like a music hall act)

Still, I love their music BECAUSE of their diversity

To a greater extent I'd say this list may be true, in musical terms, but one also has to take in account the amount they have influenced people. For example; The Beatles, BB King or Bob Dylan - In my opinion, all play very boring music BUT its that they have given inspiration to others that came after which puts them in such high regard. But naturally, there are still those who call them the greatest musicians ever simply because they are popular ;)

Now as for Pink Floyd, I really don't see how you can call them overrated. Their music is for one incredibly complex, each instrument doing a completely different thing yet they always make it work together even when they're experimenting with things that are really WAY out there so to speak, as opposed to many other bands who fail even when using linear, simple patterns. And you mentioned The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Wish you Were Here as their only good albums. Dark Side of the Moon? Meddle? The Wall? Animals? Despite their huge influence and popularity, still an UNDERrated band in my opinion.

First off, to be overrated, a band must be rated. Yo La Tengo?? Wilco?? All this guy did was take some major label mainstream bands, add some obscure bands he's not so fond of, and then consider himself a music critic. The only thing worse than a music critic, is someone pretending to be a music critic. Oh, what the f__k is a neutral milk hotel?

so ok let me see so all those bands are overrated Beatles, Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Pink Floyd etc...
I mean everything is a matter of taste, but please don't post this somewhere else because it's enough that you embarrassed yourself once
so you just took the most famous bands and you say that they are overrated
why? to be different or to be some kind of "cool" guy
I bet you never listened to an "entire" album from one of those bands, maybe just a song or so
my dear friend I am sorry to say this but you don't know anything about music
