I watched the first two episodes of The Sopranos recently. Brilliant stuff, I've already ordered S2 even though I've got 11 from S1 left!
Awesome! oh what i'd give to watch the whole run for the first time again. Season 1 in particular is a very fine season, and could of easily stood on its own. Thats not to take credit away from the further seasons, each is very much it's own season, but the first is so amazing.
Louis Theroux : Behind Bars (TV) I saw that too, a very interesting programme indeed, quite an insight.
yeah i really likee his stuff, very interesting. that bit with the skin head, now gay with a wife and kids at home :/
i meant to put his DVD Louis Theroux : Complete collection on my xmas list, i'll have to thinki a bout getting that.
He does make some really good documentaries. Speaking of some quite disturbing documentaries, did you see the panorama episode on Scientology with John Sweeney? Pure hilarity.
Nice stuff you've been watching lately. Any system behind which Simpsons eps you're re-watching/
hhmmm no real system. i guess actually i was going for mid seasons 4/5/6 (mid in terms of the DVDS out already). though i have got a system ready soon, gonna watch all the sideshow bob episodes on DVD so far! gonna do that in feb hopefully
Ooh cool, sounds like a plan. Haven't watched much Simpsons in the past 18 months or so personally.. watching all the early ones nearly non-stop for about 7 years does tend to put you off a bit. :-D I should get back into it though, especially as I liked the movie and continue to list it as my all-time favourite TV show..
How were the S19 Simpsons eps?
I Don't Wanna Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
- pretty poor, in fact it was basically that episode where marge befriends a painter who goes to jail. nothing of mention
Little Orphan Millie
- IMO, pretty solid. Milhouse goes all dark and mysterious, loner type and becomes the most popular kid in school. some really great jokes here, brilliant line reads for characters of nelson/milhouse/lisa and bart. they really shine as characters in this episode. i really recommend you search this one out.
Intriguing.. I guess they can still hit one out of the park now and then! Maybe I'll go download that one and see what I think..
yeah, maybe i wouldn't say hit out the park but it was pretty good, as i say though, it depends you might not like it but i laughed a fair few more times than i expected
I mean the situation with simpsons these days is that it has a few moments each episode. For instance i watched one of (if not the) WORST episodes ever today, Simpson Safari. However it does contain one of my all time favourite simpsons gags. When lenny is talking to the cashier guy at the supermarket and he says "i'm planning a casual dinner" and we see Carl standing in a suit, top hat, holding a bottle of wine "Casual!?" but the episode itself is crap.
Oh on a side note i've started frasier season 8, seen first 3 episodes so far, interested to view it as i see its your least rated season on "DVDS owned" list.
Haha, you're right, that is definitely a highlight in what has to be my least-favourite episode of the show. ("Kill The ALligator and Run" comes close though..)
Frasier S8.. yep, definitely the worst season IMO. Still fun but there are some absolute clunkers ("A Day In May", "Legal Tender Love and Care") though as a whole the good eps more than balance out the bad ones.
Well so far in relation to frasier, i'm not enjoying Niles / Daphne relationship. I don't like how they are playing them being nervous with eachother and not having niles going after her, has IMO, lost one of the shows best jokes / running gags. just a bit flat now
How was S8 for you then? You've now seen my favourites from S8 ("Hooping Cranes", "Hungry Heart", "Semi-Decent Proposal"/"A Passing Fancy") - not to mention some crap ("A Day In May"..)
I would deffinatly agree the ones you mentioned are VERY solid. Actually what i loved about this season (something that may of been in other seasons, just didn't notice it) was how stories carry on through episodes, not just the two parters either. such as frasier's mentor turning up, he stayed for 3 episodes, and the original problem frasier had (when he left his speech) was mentioned again in further episodes.
I agree A Day In May was pretty poor, however i did like Martin's story of attending the hearing of the man who shot him, that was well executed.
I know what you mean about the multi-episode arcs, I don't think they did those so much early on, you're right.
Hm.. one of my problems with "A Day In May" was that I thought the Martin story could have been great, it was a lovely concept, and they didn't really do anything with it. I suppose in a way it was understated and sweet but I couldn't help but desperately want more closure..
What's next on your "to-watch" list?
yeah you make a good point, but i was fairly happy with it. I felt like well, really it was out of his control, i thought for a minute he might of said a few words in his defense after the ruling in the lines of "i forgive him, please re-think your decision" but i'm glad they didn't, he was a cop and therefore would need a fairly tough and hard outlook on life, so i think his quiet and understated exit was fitting.
actually quite a few. I want to pick up Cheers season 8 which seems to have been "out of stock" for longer than i can remember on playusa.com. Frasier season 9-11 for sure. Red Dwarf i also plan on catching up on (buying S5-8). in terms of exisiting DVDS, i might re-watch American Dad soon
Ah I see you've already got going with Friends S1! i think my fave from S1 is "TOW The Blackout"
aye just watched that episode, always been a favourite of mine.
Actually that brings up a point. Me and my bro were talking and we came to a conclusion that it seems episodes of sticoms that aren't set in the usual place always seem better or more memorable. Such as if i was to watch only one episode of Red Dwarf, it would be marooned, because it was set outside usual place. Blackout episode is a bit like that, as well as the football episode of friends.
Yep, good point, seems to hold true in a lot of cases actually.. and I suppose an extension of that is when they completely break the standard format - like Malcolm In The Middle's "Bowling".
One possible counter-example is Frasier's "1000th Show" - I love it but it's not too well-liked by some (I can't recall if you like it or not?)
no i liked that episode very much so. What was the centeral complaint from fans ? just because its set outside or was it the script or acting or something?
I think the general feeling is that the plot doesn't really go anywhere, there aren't enough jokes and the conclusion's disappointing. As I say, though, I like it a lot, there are definitely some funny scenes in it.
Whoa - burning through Friends at the speed of light!
haha yeah kind of :) I've only had them a week ! well what it is , is that i'm usually up untill the early hours , as its just my sleeping pattern, even if i had college or work in the morning so since i've got the DVDS instead of surfing the web during these hours i'm watching friends on my portable DVD player in bed haha
It's been really fun revisiting all the episodes, the early seasons are brilliant. Reminds me why Ross is one of my fave all time comedy characters, out of the 6 he's the one i think i consistantly find funny all way through every season.Used to be chandler but i felt chandler lost his edge once they married him and monica, the writting for chandler didn't seem as sharp after that point.
After S3 i've got cheers S8 comming from playusa, so i'll prob be watching that and timming it in time for frasier S9 to be released over here. Just watched the episode with Roz's sister in it on paramount today. Never knew Zooey deschanel (who is one of my fave actresses) played her.
Cool.
I think I'd still give the edge to Chandler but I do agree that Ross was more consistent. It seems both Niles and Chandler lost something when they got together with their respective women. Yep, Zooey Deschanel is great in "Kissing Cousin" - her talents (and hotness!) make watching the thing just bearable ;)
Good luck with Cheers S8. I haven't seen S7 yet actually - kinda hoping they'll get round to releasing it over here..
Next up for me is South Park S3 & 4.
hmm you didn't like "kissing cousin" as an episode ? given the "just bearable" comment :) i thought it was pretty solid, i like Kenny as a character too so seeing him in part of the main stroy (if ending was somewhat predictable) was cool.
Whats your opinion on Proxy Prexy? where frasier uses martn to make changes in the condo board?
thx, looking forward to viewing. hmm wonder if they will release over here they are taking their sweet time. it always makes me laugh when i think South Park S1 came out over here end of last year, and i already had 1-10 from america, UK takes its sweet time.
hope you enjoy south park, 3 & 4 are very solid seasons.
I like Kenny too, but I didn't think much of Kissing Cousin. Proxy Prexy was pretty good though.
Got the South Parks this morning from Play. Already finished the first disc of S3, really funny stuff, especially "Rainforest Schmainforest". Thankfully they seem to be speeding up the UK releases now - S1-6 are out over here with S7 out in June and S8 in August.
Ever seen "Grounded for Life"? I've been watching it a lot lately, great traditional sitcom in the "Friends"/"Raymond" vein with slightly less linear plots. Hilarious stuff. I think Trouble show it, if you have that channel.
never seen it but i'll tune in. I'm looking for a new show, as i got into The Big Bagn Theory, so much so that i watched the final 3 episodes online before they air here, so apart from rewatching that series when the DVD comes out in sept., i'm looking to get into a new show. i have trouble so i'll check it out no doubt, cheers for the tip dude
did u watch Big bang theory on C4/E4?
and how have you been altely ? up to much?
Ah I saw a couple of episodes of The Big Bang Theory and liked it, I'll be getting the DVD when it comes out.
Not up to much - my A-Level exams start next week, so I should be revising for those, but as usual the TV proves a distraction :-D Been watching "Grounded for Life" a lot as I said, and I'm also hooked on "Britain's Got Talent" sadly! You?
I've been busy at work, but otherwise, chilling ! :) yeah my parents are watching Britain's Got Talent, i did like the M.Jackson Dancers lol
Ah yes they were fantastic, hehe.
Random question Rushmore - what's your most-viewed list on Listology? As far as I can tell you can only view the number of reads for your own articles/lists but I'm intrigued as to what your most-viewed might be. The Scrubs quotes maybe? :)
hehe yup scrubs quotes by far with 144449
next is one of my "guess the celeb by the hair" with like 3400
oh i actually have a question about the South Park UK dvds, i was watching American Dad Vol. 3 (by far their best run yet) and the F word was used 3 or 4 times, uncensored. My question is, is that for same for the UK DVDS of south park ? Personally i think bleeps can make it funnier majority of the time but the appearance of the F word in american dad sparked my interest
Interesting thanks! (My most viewed is my original top 400 songs lists, nearly 9000 views)
I noticed that on American Dad too, but no it's not that way in the R2 South Park DVDs. (I think only Fox do the 'uncensored' stuff and SP is Paramount) Personally I'm OK with it either way, in fact I think I actually prefer the bleeps sometimes (especially in South Park).
ah cheers for confirming that mate! oh yes i agree the bleeps can be better, even though you can tell what they are gonna say, its a bit like the horror rule. If you don't show the violence in a horror movie, the audience imagine is always gonna be far worse, so i think leaving what they say a little to the imagination is better.
An update on this front: it seems the R1 release of South Park S11 is "uncensored", so for the first time Paramount are releasing a South Park season without the bleeps. I'd rather they decided to keep them, personally.. I'm collecting the R2s, though, so maybe they'll keep it censored on the R2, who knows..
same here, makes it funnier, what you don't hear is sometimes funnier than what you do. Swearing alone isn't funny its how you use it. Granted the movie was hillarious. Plus it makes the movie less special, i'm still gonna get it for my birthday though
What did you think of The Apprentice final and Back To You?
The Apprentice Final : Happy with the result. I feel though claire was actually probably more qaulified, i prefered Lee, he seemed like a stand up guy. I actually after i saw their presentation thought Alex & Halen (dunno if she spells it like that, because says if differently)
had it in the bag after their presentation but the reason Alan sugar fired them was totally fair.
Back to You : Meh. There was some great jokes and moments, and i know this is bit silly but i'm glad he's playing a similiar type of character as frasier. Theres also talented people involved, Fred Willard, Patricia Heaton and not to mention its done by some of the same team as Cheers, friends, frasier and such. However for me, only a few jokes that landed, granted they were very funny when they did. i have to say i prefer The Big Bang Theory in terms of new sitcoms. did you see back to you ?
I preferred Lee to Claire too. I think both concepts were equally good, so all else equal I guess if Alex and Helene (that's how it's spelled, btw, I think) didn't really take into account the cost then it was fair for them to lose.
Didn't see Back To You, no, might check it out on 4 On Demand if it's on there. I was originally going to wait for a DVD release but as it only lasted one season it's hard to say if it'll get one.
My Big Bang Theory S1 came today as well too. Already halfway through, and I'm loving it. :-D Really funny. My favourite character is Leonard.
:p it seems we agree on the character front, on re-watching the episodes so far i'm really digging Howard too. Sheldon does get a bit annoying and unrealistic at times but he also has some of the best lines
Yep, I'll go along with that. Still, on the whole I really enjoyed the season. (I just finished the last episode five minutes ago - so I watched the whole season within about twelve hours, which I should perhaps be embarrassed to admit..)
Favourite episodes were "The Hamburger Postulate", "The Loobenfeld Decay", "The Peanut Reaction" and "The Tangerine Factor". All the main cast work well together. Loved Kaley Cuoco, she's good at what she does and nice eye candy. Great to see Sara Gilbert too (Leslie). I like the Chuck Lorre Productions messages after the credits too.
Off to watch the bonus documentary now..
Kaley Cuoco is very good in the show, i find the moments between her and leonard suprsingly effective emotionally, they work very well together. In the party episode when she said "you're so smart" then leonard goes "yeah, i'm a freakin' genius" i thought that was hillarious. They seem to work well both doing funny and serious, oh and yes she's a total hottie :) Sara Gilbert is VERY funny in the show, what has she been in previously ? (you said her name as if she's been in other stuff, i'm not aware of her other work.)
my faves are "The Fuzzy Boots Corollary" , "The Hamburger Postulate", "The Grasshopper Experiment", "The Jerusalem Duality" and the final few episodes.
Sara Gilbert was in Roseanne when she was younger, and also in ER and 24 more recently. Oh, and she was the voice of Laura Powers in the Simpsons episode "New Kid on the Block".
I love the scenes with Penny and Leonard too, they work really well together. So very funny :-)
Laura Powers, awesome. Thats one of my all time fave episodes
Big Bang Theory S2 off to a good start?
solid! a lot of laughs. Actually i laughed a lot at sheldon's involvment in the episode, he does his usual thing but it seemed somewhat toned down, he moved out of leonard's places and had to stay with the other guys. i know you don't like watching them before they are on dvd but its on youtube (failing it being taken down) if you want to watch
OK, good. Maybe I'll be tempted into checking it out then... :-)
