- 11/21- Track 29 (1988, Nicolas Roeg) [***1/2]
- 11/20- Home Coming (2006, Omer Ugur) [3] {Only of interest to see what Sibel Kekilli's been up to lately- strange to see that even though she hasn't gone all Hollywood after Head-On, she's still playing the same loving, worried wife roles in Turkey that she'd get here. Still, despite the nothing role, she proves that she's the real thing, making us care about a part that really doesn't deserve it, in a movie that really doesn't deserve her.}
- 11/19- Saawariya (2007, Sanjay Leela Bhansali) [6]
- 11-18- Fay Grim (2006, Hal Hartley) [4] {Hard to argue with what this dude says about the movie, but in a way I think Posey is actually perfect for the film since she doesn't engage with the role and neither, really, does Hartley engage with the movie. He piles twist upon twist as in any spy thriller, but they don't build to anything or have any significance. In addition, I gotta say that I found this quasi-sequel to Henry Fool to be a kind of betrayal of what I loved about the original movie. Yes, by relating Henry's past we find out how he became how he was in that film, but I found that it put too fine a point on the character. What made that film special wasn't that we wondered what made the dude tick, but rather the idea that here's this strange dude who thought he was destined for immortality, only to discover that the closest he'd get to greatness would be recognizing and inspiring it in someone else, while he himself had to hack it on the everyday grind like every other anonymous schmoe. I really didn't care what Henry's confessions really were, and I sort of resent that someone believed I did.}

- 11/15- Ottawa International Animation Festival Signal Film (2007, Odell/Mehring/Dahlbeck/Nord/Andersson) {I get the sinking feeling that if I credit this I should start crediting the Wex F/V snipe that MikeO made that plays before every Wexner screening, or the "There are these two gangs, and when they dance, they fight. They DANCE!FIGHT!" ad before screenings at TIFF. But since it's listed on the program, what the heck.}

- 11/13- Stop-Loss (2008, Kimberly Peirce) [7]
- 11/12- La Notte (1961, Michelangelo Antonioni) [***]
- 11/11- /Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006, Adam McKay)/ [6] {Still not as consistently inspired as Anchorman, but lots of fun, especially when John C. Reilly or Gary Cole or especially Sacha Baron Cohen are onscreen. "Profiling purposes"... heh heh.}
- 11/10- /The Hoax/ [4] {When you're visiting your parents, you're kind of at their mercy re: movies to watch. Could've been worse, I s'pose.}
- 11/9- Rock and Slide (2006), Nethergate (2005), and Unnamed Complement (2007, all Bruce McClure)- none of these qualify as films in the traditional sense, but are nonetheless fascinating and wholly cinematic. For the uninitiated, McClure uses between two and four projectors, modified to his specifications, and hooks them up to amplifiers and distortion pedals. His programs- best described as "performances"- involve him projecting specially designed loops of film through these projectors and using the distortion pedals to vary the projector speed and to turn a basic sound pattern into intricate, percussive music. The result is hypnotic- while the varying flicker patterns and plays of light between the different projectors are strangely relaxing, the sound is practically assaultive, sometimes like a cacophany of ringing bells, at other times closer to noise rock (do I have your attention yet Steve?). McClure is the closest thing I've seen to a cinematic DJ, and I can't recommend him more highly to those omnivorous cinematic appetites.
- 11/7- Destiny (2006, Zeki Demirkubuz) [5] {"... no escaping that for me/ destiny, destiny..." That's two Turkish movies I've seen that are about how Turkish men are weak-willed jerks. I know I'm probably just watching the wrong ones, but yeesh. Destiny is more successful than Times and Winds because Demirkubuz is a superior filmmaker, as well as the fact that he never invites us to feel sorry for his characters by making them put-upon kids. His protagonist more or less gets himself into his predicament- trouble is, he's not all that interesting. Demirkubuz places too much of a distance between himself and the characters onscreen, so that there's little to do but observe. And in a story like this one, there really should be more interest beyond regarding the characters like animals in the zoo. At least Fassbinder had his scathing sense of humor going for him.}
- 11/6- The Tenant (1976, Roman Polanski) [***1/2] {Compared to its counterparts in Polanski's "apartment trilogy"- Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby- this is less effective as a genre film, but is just as fascinating as those movies in its own way. There's something tentative about Polanski's direction here that's off-putting from practically the first frame, well before the weird stuff starts to go down. This is aided by the director's performance in the lead role, off-kilter but milquetoast at the same time. I was reminded of the hiding-out scenes in Polanski's later film The Pianist, and indeed the film can be read as a paranoid nightmare suffered by an outsider who's afraid of being persecuted by those around him. But regardless of what it means, this is an eerie piece of work, with a kind of anti-logic that recalls a bad dream in the way many more self-consciously "dreamlike" filmmakers can't quite manage.}
- 11/5- /The Umbrellas of Cherbourg/ (1964, Jacques Demy) [****]
- 11/4- /Everything Will Be OK/ {Currently neck and neck with Zodiac for the title of year's best.}
- 11/4- /Lola/ (1961, Jacques Demy) [****]
- 11/3- American Gangster (2007, Ridley Scott) [6] {Exactly what you'd expect a recent Ridley Scott version of a true crime saga to be- impeccably made, entertaining but respectably so, and sort of uninspired. Might have worked better as a miniseries, or for that matter as a scruffy 90-minute cops'n'robbers thriller. But that kind of movie doesn't get Oscar™ buzz, now does it?}
- 11/2- Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006, Goran Dukic) [6] {Went in expecting the hipster Defending Your Life, and while this isn't necessarily a bad description it's much more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Part of it is the morbid sense of humor Dukic brings to the party, less rollicking than Kusturica, less lysergic than Makavejev, but a similarly Eastern European sensibility, drawn to cultural dross and the downtrodden. Got its share of problems, but surprisingly fun, with stunt casting that actually WORKS. And that final scene is perfect. Also, Shannyn Sossamon doesn't usually do it for me, but she really did here. Must be my thing for women who can swear like men, although what that says about me I won't begin to speculate.}
- 11/2- The Monster Squad (1987, Fred Dekker) [***] {I somehow missed this during my childhood- mom wasn't a big fan of what she called "yelling kid movies"- but worked like a charm on me twenty years down the line. As full-blooded (and surprisingly violent) as this is, I was most surprised by its innocence. Never today would a movie be made in which kids could wander around like this, or smoke without getting into trouble, or curse. But that's a major part of the charm, as the heroes are just at the age where they're dipping their toes into the ocean of adulthood, becoming more independent and acting grown-up based on their limited knowledge of the subject. Of course the story is all prepubescent wish fulfillment, but there's nothing wrong with that. And thanks to Dekker and screenwriter Shane Black, the self-awareness of the story never comes off as cutesy. Beats the heck outta Van Helsing, that's for sure.}
- 11/1- Times and Winds (2006, Reha Edrem) [4] {Certainly more polished and technically show-offy (especially the crane shots and copious use of Steadicam) than I was expecting from a movie set in a small Turkish village. The disconnect between the filmmaking style and the material is interesting but also distracting, which can also be said of the awesome but almost wholly unnecessary Arvo Part score. But no amount of filmmaking chops could disguise the miserablism on display here- bad daddies by the score, violence against children, and so on. Plus the scenes of animal sex made me think that Reygadas found someone else to take over for him now that he's moved on.}
- 10/31- Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964, Robert Aldrich) [***1/2] {I love how classically-styled yet completely deranged this is. Definitely a keeper.}
- 10/31- /Spider (2002, David Cronenberg)/ [***1/2] {An inspired pairing with Charlotte for a Halloween double feature. This is so much better the second time.}

Shorts are listed but not numbered.
Ratings on a 10-point scale for new films, and a **** scale for older films. Don't ask.

I haven't had the chance to review any films in quite a spell, but I also loved The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford...
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Beats the heck outta Van Helsing, that's for sure.
But then, that's true of your average test pattern... :-)
So was this McClure thing a Wexner special? 'Cause I admit, the description makes me feel a bit jealous...
Meanwhile, I tried to see No Country on Sunday, not thinking that the fact of its playing in exactly one theater in the Village might lead to sellouts. Evening wasn't a total loss, though -- I walked a few blocks and saw Brakhage's 'Pittsburgh Trilogy' instead.
I believe he's touring with it, but I don't know how to find out for sure. You could probably just Google the name to find out. But I have a feeling it'd be right up your alley.
And I'd imagine that it would be hard to find a better movie out there than No Country, but Brakhage is a fine alternative.
11/15- OOIOO "UMO" (2007, Shoji Goto) {Um, what?}
Dude, it's OOIOO. Don't ask questions, just roll with it (he says, despite having not seen the film and also having not been terribly thrilled with the last OOIOO album he heard, the meandering Kila Kila Kila).
I didn't necessarily mean the "um, what?" in a negative way, understand. This thing is sort of awesome, although it got immediately upstaged by the sublime Framing (I actually prefer the German title of that short, Bildfenster/Fensterbilder, but whatcha gonna do?).
I admire your regimen. Mine, for a critic, is pathetic in comparison. The closest I can claim is that I've seen the first five seasons of 24 in marathon day long viewing sesssions!
