Author Comments:
They've announced the nominees for the Shortlist Prize, which honors albums that have yet to reach certified gold status (500,000 copies sold.) A panel of celebrities - including Jack Black, Norah Jones (?), Chris Carrabba (?!?), John Mayer (#@%!) and ?uestlove - nominate albums for the Long List, which is then pared down to ten picks prior to final voting.
I've italicized the albums I own and starred the ones I'd like to check out. To me, the list is overly safe and full of major label bands, and misses some great releases - most egregiously, the new Mission of Burma album.
I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on the list!
UPDATE: openstacks reminded me that the list has been now been pared down to ten. The nominees appear in bold.

You may have noticed that the Shortlist short list has been announced:
Air – TALKIE WALKIE (Astralwerks)
Dizzee Rascal – BOY IN DA CORNER (Matador/XL)
Franz Ferdinand – FRANZ FERDINAND (Domino/Epic)
Ghostface Killah – THE PRETTY TONEY ALBUM (Def Jam)
The Killers – HOT FUSS (Island)
Loretta Lynn – VAN LEAR ROSE (Interscope)
Nellie McKay – GET AWAY FROM ME (Columbia)
The Streets – A GRAND DON’T COME FOR FREE (Vice)
TV On the Radio – DESPERATE YOUTH, BLOODTHIRSTY BABES (Touch & Go)
Wilco – A GHOST IS BORN (Nonesuch)
I'm surprised at the popularity of the TV on the Radio album. What'd you think of it?
Thanks for the reminder - I'd been meaning to update the list with the 10 final nominees.
As for TVotR, I listened to it a lot after I first bought it, but not so much lately. They put on a very good show when I saw them this spring, so it would probably behoove me to give it another spin. I do admit, though, that "Staring at the Sun" is just a great song.
The Killers do not belong on this list.
Agreed. The Killers CD is the only one I've purchased all year that I truly dislike. Meadowlands by The Wrens is a far more worthy inclusion into the Final 10.
I really think they are brilliant in analyzing the ubiquitous theme of boyfriends who look like girlfriends.
Brilliant.
The Killers are to Indie Rock of the '00s as Candlebox was to grunge.
I've never heard of that group but I'll assume it's bad.
Candlebox was awful.
Absolutely awful.
The Killers do not belong on this list.
The shortlist is so safe. I wish they hadn't included Wilco and The Killers. Two safe choices that are the weakest/worst on the longlist, let alone the shortlist.
Loretta will probably take this. That said, I'm rooting for The Streets and Dizzee Rascal.
Even the long-list makes me think that the Shortlist Prize has been co-opted by the major labels as a means of promoting their critically adored, but sales challenged releases.
I'll probably be pulling for The Streets as well. Loretta Lynn is going to win many, many well deserved Grammys because of VLR, so might as well give this one to the underdog.
