Wow, talk about stuck in an era! I know this isn't my definitive list, but they're the first 20 that came to my head without having my collection in front of me.
Edit: I can't believe I had the name of the Blackalicious album wrong for so long. How embarrassing! Also, I realized that I'd forgotten the first Violent Femmes album, so I had to correct that mistake with a very difficult cut. [10/20/04]

All great picks and all but one have spots in my collection. I still haven't heard Sufjan Stevens, which is weird considering how much music I buy and how often I've heard good things.
It's my goal to spread the gospel of Sufjan as much as possible. I bought Michigan because the songs are based on my home state, but it turned out to be something incredibly haunting and beautiful. His (really cool) website has clips from most of the songs, so I highly recommend checking it out.
