  • The 4th Man
  • **Gerard, a semi-alcoholic bisexual writer in a depressive rut, meets the mysterious Christine at a writers’ seminar and is immediately entranced. She seems to be everything he’s ever wanted wonderful in the sack, rich and beautiful and who also happens to have 3 dead husbands, plus another lover named Herman. Sexuality is omnipresent in almost every scene and renders the film into what could be called an “aggravated g-spot” full of garish vibrant colours and much nudity. Barraging the viewer from the start with graphically beautiful images that get slowly more threatening as Gerard’s inner life begins to seep into reality. Images of slaughtered bulls, bloody eyeballs and, in a most unpleasant moment for me, a severed penis that portend either malice in Christine or delusional episodes in Gerard. Thus defining the main theme of the film, reality vs. fantasy and how the two sometimes intermingle which Verhoeven handles excellently creating an atmosphere of constantly shifting camera angles and disorienting crosscutting. He is helped by the admirable work of Jerome Krabbe, fabulous as Gerard, embodying everything indecent in a person by his actions and yet remaining a descent human being at his core. Matched equally by Renee Soutendijk who manages to portray innocence, malice and glorious sexuality in every scene. Their performances are responsible for the tenuous balancing act that creates doubts even till the very end and their chemistry makes the film crackle with excitement. The 4th Man is a bitter black comedy, an exciting mystery and a sexually charged thriller moulded together brilliantly by Paul Verhoeven aided by Jan de Bont’s gorgeous cinematography. Perhaps the finest film of Verhoeven’s catalogue, this is an unjustly ignored gem.
