1972: What I've Seen...

Tags:
  • In order of preference:
  • MASTERPIECE

  • The Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola, USA) - Yep, I'm runnin' with the pack here, and not feeling guilty about it.
  • NEAR-MASTERPIECE

  • Solaris (Andrei Tarkovsky, USSR) - Science-fiction rendered hypnotic and dreamy -- zero-gravity Bach one of the most beautiful moments of the 70s.
  • Cries & Whispers (Ingmar Bergman, Sweden) - Like most good Bergman, this is partly a horror movie. The horrid stench of death has never felt so overpowering.
  • GREAT

  • The Heartbreak Kid (Elaine May, USA) - You're gonna see a lot of Elaine May high on my lists -- this chick doesn't get enough recognition. Heartbreak Kid is effortless comedy.
  • Aguirre, The Wrath of God (Werner Herzog, Germany)
  • Deliverance (John Boorman, USA)
  • The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Germany) - Best. Final. Shot. Ever.
  • Avanti! (Billy Wilder, USA)
  • REALLY GOOD

  • The Discreet Charm of the Bourgoisie (Luis Buñuel, France)
  • The Merchant of Four Seasons (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Germany)
  • The King of Marvin Gardens (Bob Rafelson, USA)
  • Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades (Kenji Misumi, Japan)
  • Cabaret (Bob Fosse, USA)
  • GOOD

  • Across 110th Street (Barry Shear, USA)
  • Fat City (John Huston, USA)
  • Chloe in the Afternoon (Eric Rohmer, France)
  • Frenzy (Alfred Hitchcock, UK)
  • Raw Meat (Gary Sherman, UK)
  • The Getaway (Sam Peckinpah, USA)
  • Last Tango in Paris (Bernardo Bertolucci, France)
  • Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan (Chor Yuen, Hong Kong)
  • NOT RECOMMENDED

  • Female Convict Scorpion, J-41 (Shunya Ito, Japan) - Not recommended, but has some strong camp value and a few really good scenes.
  • Battles Without Honor or Humanity: The Yakuza Papers (Kinji Fukasaku, Japan)

  • Still need to see from this year:

  • Ulzana's Raid
  • Avanti!
  • The Visitors
  • Raw Meat
  • Bleak Moments
  • Deathdream
  • The King of Marvin Gardens
  • The Merchant of Four Seasons
  • Sleuth

Looking at my own forthcoming 1972 list, I thought Sleuth was quite good. Have you seen that one?

Ah yeah, I've only seen a portion of it, and that was a long time ago. I'll add it to my "Still need to see" list.

Oh yeah, I just saw Sleuth yesterday and it is great. You should see that one as soon as possible. Laurence Olivier, Michael Caine and Alec Cawthorne are great!
