  • **Sarajit Ray continues his trilogy with Apu entering young manhood as tragedy strikes his family and he is forced to make a decision between tradition and a new life. The film is strikingly different from Pather Panchali in the subject matter, set predominantly in a city the visuals are teaming with rushing people and foreign noises. The same can be said for the tone of the film which is less placid and considerably more mordant. This is not the strongest film of the series, that place is reserved for Pather, but it’s the most emotional and uplifting (if you can say that about the series). Another strong segment that extends the wonderful first features story with a welcome second act.
