  • M. Hulot’s Holiday
  • **Tati’s first delightful film about Mr. Hulot maintains a genteel sense of humour without negating a large amount of laughs. Hulot goes to the seaside to partake of a grand vacation spot and manages to wreak havoc on everything in sight. The formula is simple, Tati’s execution of the formula is breathtakingly complex, full of subtle visual puns, verbal and slapstick humour and exquisite episodic storytelling; without Tati’s eye for detail the film simply wouldn’t be very fun, not to mention uproariously funny.

  • **Intense, unusual noir about 4 men driving trucks of nitroglicerine over 300 miles of rough road. Clouzot (Les Diaboliques) direction levens the manly gusto with solid well-drawn characters whose emotions begin to fray under the stress. Yves Montand is slowly becoming one of my favorite actors and here he plays a brusque Corsican with a heart of stone. The first half is an intense examination of specific characteristics and the film seems to enjoy putting the screws to them as the tension mounts. The second half is the drive, a heart-pounding tour de force of suspense. Certain scenes awed me with their power and intensity derived from visual story-telling. Masterfully assembling scenes with a series of images that best translate the undercurrent of the scene. Excellent dialogue as well which tends to sway towards the existential, but I enjoy the hammy spirituality. An exhilerating film worthy of classic status. However the last five minutes would rank among the worst endings ever filmed. Why such ineptness was tacked onto "Wages" is a mystery to me.
