Author Comments:

And thus the final chapter on my Movies I've Seen series, the fifties - a great decade for film, though you can't always tell by the movies I've seen.

Cloned From:

Damn, I wish I'd seen all those great movies. There's just not enough time in the world to enjoy its pleasures.

You said it, brother.

I was wondering if anyone knows the actor who starred in a film about the mau mau uprising. The film came out in the 50's. I don't know the name of the film but would like to see if I can find it. Thanks

You might be talking about Something of Value, which starred Rock Hudson and Sidney Poitier.

Excellent list!
I may have overseen it, but where is East of Eden?
I also wish I had seen all of these movies.
Among those you haven't yet seen:
- An American in Paris: 7/10 (6 Academy Awards, wonderful songs and dance sequences, great direction, but I think one has to like musicals very much to love this one.)
- Ben-Hur: 5/10 (the horse race is great, but the rest is tedious)
- Rebel without a Cause: 9/10 (sometimes sentimental, but great actors: James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo)
- Rio Bravo: 7/10 (a good western, but there are others that are better, by far)
- Shane: 7/10 (a legendary film, very unusual in tone, sometimes boring)
- A Streetcar Named Desire: 8/10 (for me personally the same problem as with On the Waterfront: a good film, but not great)
[- East of Eden: 10/10 (the best film by Elia Kazan I have seen till today. The novel is great, too.)]
P.S.: It's a relief to see that I'm not the only one who hasn't yet seen The African Queen. :)

uh... Pather Panchali. What's the deal there?

It's probably a good movie, but I couldn't really get into it. Definitely mea culpa, and perhaps I'll try again someday. My review is here.

Fair enough. It's not a film that's stuck in my memory all that strongly, but I did think it deserved all the hype when I saw it... I guess we both need to watch it again sometime. And I certainly agree about The Ox-Bow Incident

I am trying to find a movie i saw on TV in the 50's.

New York city, last man on earth (black man) finds the last woman on earth (white blonde)

Everythings fine untill a man (white) shows up on a boat in the harbor. He is sick
and the woman nurses him to health. Jelousy arives to create conflict. I have been looking for some time with no luck. Can you help?

Thanks

Gary Gray

I'm sorry, I have no idea. Sounds like a Twilight Zone episode though.

Thanks for the reply. I think it may have been a British movie. The actor who showed up in a boat is British.

"More power to public domain."
