... If I were to hedge I'd say this is my favorite non-animated Christmas movie. But I won't hedge. It's my favorite.

  • Black Narcissus

... Can I be the first Black Narcissus reviewer to not mention the cinematography? Oops, apparently not. Well, as long as I've broken the ice I should mention that I was not only impressed with the scenery, but thought they captured Sister Ruth in her various states perfectly (you'll know what that means when you see it). Five nuns attempt to open a convent and dispensary in the Himalayas. To say the deck is stacked against them doesn't begin to cover it. At times the movie seems slow, but really it's just a slow build to a riveting climax. I love it when I truly have no idea how a movie is going to end. Deborah Kerr and David Farrar are both excellent, and I can't believe this is the only movie of his I've heard of. Jean Simmons is a chameleon. Even knowing it was her I couldn't recognize her. Watch this as a double feature with Great Expectations just for that.
  • The Ghost & Mrs. Muir

... The clack of four manual typewriter keystrokes in a row has never been funnier. Could have done with a bit more subtlety in the ending though, and our heroine's treatment of her loyal servant in the latter half of the movie leaves a bit of a bad taste (including

her dying words, fer cripes sake
), but all in all a very enjoyable romantic fantasy.
  • Glad I Saw

  • Brute Force

... Good prison movie, watchable, with a terrific climax, but it felt a bit stilted a melodramatic at times. And, oh my, the fur coat wife. Worst movie wife ever (and her husband is a moron).
