  • **A hugely dramatic, uber-cheesy swish-fest about a budding doctor and his erstwhile home town. Garishly extravagant with the emotions every single character must overcome at least 2 deaths, some sort of painful experience and a tortured lost-love. Reality takes a back seat to the over-blown yet hugely enjoyable cheese-ball. An excellent film for nights when you feel like the world is out to getcha.

  • **The Spanish Postman Always Rings Twice with a touch more realism and a lot of unnecessary story-telling. This movie is long, seriously repetative and unintentionally funny at times. However, The film has spates of grand entertainment about every 30 minutes followed by a 15 minute breather of boredom. An irritating habit that had me glancing at the timer quite a few times. Why am I then putting it under the "Very Good" heading? 1. The Performances are great; Clara Calamai is exquisite as the femme fatale and Massimo Girori does a fantastic Humphry Bogart impersonation as well as the rest of the cast. 2. The script is fine and Visconti is a great director even if his film has a 30 minute spare tire weighing it down. and 3. The neo-realist bent gives the story some grit. Personally, I prefer the John Garfield & Lana Turner pacer from 46, but this one'll do for a slow night.
