My favourites asterisked. Definitions aren't easy so i've allowed a wide berth, included a few favourites by Hitch that probably fit, even if often as much about suspenseful adventure/ spies/ psychological turmoil as gangsters + the details of crime. Also some comedies, even an animation. No doubt i've forgotten some, so suggestions welcome.
I've not forgotten Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, The Usual Suspects, Se7en, Scarface (32), Get Carter, Taxi Driver, Trainspotting, The Italian Job (69), Dirty Harry, City of God, The Ladykillers (55) + other famous ones, but i'm just not keen enough, sorry.
