The Pompidou's not really that great. I mean they have some great stuff of course, I remember a particularly great Francis Bacon, and a Jackson Pollock, but there's an awful lot of bullshit too, and it doesn't have a great atmosphere to it imho. There is a cool arthouse cinema just near it though, I remember they were having an Ozu retrospective when I was there.
I've only been to six of the ones on your list (actually I think I spent about two minutes in the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, so I guess it's seven). The Uffizi is top of my list of ones I want to go to.
The Pompidou looks pretty nifty to me, from the photos anyway. And I understand they have a huge collection of Man Ray, who j'adore. Hopefully I'll be able to make a firsthand assessment later this year. I do want to go to the Cinematheque Francaise, mostly for the history.
Among all of these museums, I have only been to the Rijksmuseum.
For the Louvre you'll need several days. But at least it's free.
If you ever get the chance to visit Luxembourg, one of the few really interesting museums is "Family of Man" by Edward Steichen. Great collection of photographies.
Thanks for the heads up. I've never heard of Steichen. I've barely heard of Luxembourg.
I've been to several of the museums on your list. I will like to go to many more on your list. Your list does not have any museums in S. America.
Museo Natonal de Bellas Artes. Buenos Aires, Argentina
Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Beunos Aires. Buen os Aires, Argentina
Museu de Arte de Moderna. Rio de Janero, Brazil
Museo del Nacional de Bellas Artes. Santiago, Chile
Fundacion Guzyasamin. Quito, Ecuador
Museo de la Inquisition. Lima, Peru
Museo Nacion de Antropologia, Archeologia e Historia. Lim a, Peru
Casa Carciaso. Cusco, Peru$
I do have one South American museum on my list, but I should probably have more. Specifically, I'm looking to kick off the San Francisco MoMA when I find a replacement. Do you know of English language websites for those you listed?
I am not sure of English language website, but I know that you can find some for the museums. You can always go on the travel book sights like Fodders to get information on them in English. I have traveled a lot in South America and speak Spanish. n
Here are the museums that I have been to on the list:
France:
Pompidou. The top floor is the only redeeming floor in the museum. The rest is crap.
Louvre. Wonderful museum, but need to spend more than a day there.
Musee d'Orsay. Fabulous museum. The best museum in Paris.
Greece:
Acropolis Museum. Interesting museum, but it dwarfs compared to the National Archeological Museum in Athens.
U.S.A.
Art Institute of Chicago. Great museum.
Museum of Science and Indstry. It was O.K. More geared for kids. (Chicago)
Guggenheim Museum. Fabulous museum. Wonderful collection and great atmosphere. (New York)
MOMA. Best museum in New york.
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. It was a wonderful museum.
National gallery of Art (DC). Wonderful museum.
Smithsonian. The Smithsonian is a series of different museums that are incredible.
Turkey
Ephasus Museum. Incredible look at Ancient Greek art.o
