Dracula's great! Good choice.
Yes, it's one of my favourites!
Once Upon A Time In America is a great gangster epic. It's not an easy movie, however, with a very long running time, and multiple flashbacks - flashforwards across the life-spans of its characters. But Robert DeNiro and James Woods are both superb, and, as I've said elsewhere, a deeply moving sadness is achieved. It is helped also by the musical score, composed by the great Ennio Morricone - not as wonderful as his 'West' score, but still excellent. There are a lot of very good gangster movies, this is in the top four or five.
Oh yes, the score is really memorable.
I have added the following movies to my Netflix queue:
Wild Strawberries (1957)
Dracula (1958)
Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
looks like i got 7 movies to add to my to see list... seen arabia and america and i totally agree with you, they are great and underwatched... other than that the only other one i've had an inkling to see was wild strawberries
I especially recommend Requiem for a Dream. A film you will never forget!
Indeed.
I've seen 7 of these. East of Eden, The Company of Wolves and Downfall are the ones i haven't seen. Downfall is a film i'm very interested in, would have seen it at the cinema but didn't have the right company.
East of Eden is a famous movie not many people have seen. Yet it is certainly James Dean's best (and that is, considering the two other classics Giant and Rebel without a Cause very much to say).
The Company of Wolves: A unique film, fantastic (in both meanings), greatly acted. Just sth. that sticks in your mind for some time.
Downfall is a tough film. I live quite close to Germany, and this country's culture has got a great impact on Luxembourg, too. Unfortunately the good films are very rare. Downfall is the best German film I have seen since Run Lola Run. At the moment, the Germans try (especially through films) to "digest" their recent past. Meantime it has been so much that this already gets on my nerves, but generally I find it a very positive attitude.
I'll check out East of Eden and Downfall. I did start to watch The Company of Wolves awhile back but stopped because it was so uninteresting.
Once Upon a Time in America and Requiem for a Dream are must sees. I keep a little list with my all-time favorite films and currently it only has 25-30 films or so, so that's not much if you consider how many films I've seen. Those two are definitely on there though. So I totally, 100% agree. :)
I remember wanting to go to bed a year ago or so, as it was 2 AM, and I flipped through the channels one more time. Once Upon a Time in America was just about to begin (beginning credits were rolling) and I thought I would watch a little. Four hours later I was still sitting there, not even realizing it was around 6 already. :) Great film.
True. Once Upon a Time in America is one of those long movies where you don't feel the running time.
