10 best rock artists of the 90's

- 1. Pearl Jam: Pearl Jam is the epitome of grunge rock music. While some would argue that Nirvana disserves this title, it remains that Pearl Jam is an extremely innovative band who merged mainstream rock with artful mood-setting melodies to create a soundtrack for the 90s. My favorites include "Black" and "Yellow Ledbetter"
- 2. Dave Matthews Band: One of the most loved and most hated bands of the 90s. Constantly being pegged as overrated, Dave Matthews Band created some of the most played and some of the most memorable songs of the decade. They first came onto the scene as largely a jam live band with members that looked to be from all different parts of the earth. When their debut studio album came, people caught on to the artful jazzy folky rhythms and ever since the band has had perhaps the most loyal fanbase in the country. With a host of excellent musicians and a catalog of undeniably great songs (Such as "Ants Marching", "Crash Into Me", "#41" and "Dont Drink the Water", DMB is disserving of all credit.

- 4. Alice In Chains
- 5. Nirvana
- 6. R.E.M.
- 7. Stone Temple Pilots
- 8. Stabbing Westward
- 9. Radiohead
- 10. Weezer

I am well aware that this joint is full of anti-mainstream activists and my list is nothing but mainstream, so get up here and criticize my choices, I'm looking forward to it.

I like that, anti-mainstream activists. Well I gotta disagree I like a lot of mainstream stuff...
But anyways, I have to say that Pearl Jam is a good band but I never could get into them. Just something about their sound, too lugubrious or something. Dave Matthews, well I don't really like them either. Radiohead, I like some of their older stuff but every time I listen to them I just don't feel good. Depressing stuff, frankly I generally want music to be uplifting. There's a couple of groups I really like here, including Nirvana and Weezer, and especially REM. I'm trying to think of my favorite 90s bands and you know what, there aren't that many, except for Built to Spill.
I guess I'm weird because I feel good after listening to Radiohead. I know on the surface their music seems depressing and most people find them depressing. Kid A especially has an optimistic vibe underneath everything. Don't know why I feel that but I do.
saka, i definitely dig what you're sayin' about KID A. i feel the same way. i dont think its depressing at all. do you prefer older radiohead or newer stuff? i gotta say, i'm really into the last two albums, but not as interested in Pablo Honey or The Bends. Just never could get into them. Part of the reason i like the last two albums so much is... i guess i feel transported when i listen to them, like getting lost in a novel, ya know?
i understand the pearl jam vs. nirvana contest. it does seem that grunge fans take sides with one of the two. personally, i favor nirvana more. i think i would include soundgarden and remove DMB (sorry, but i am a DMB hater), & Stabbing Westward. I think i would also include Tool.
The Pearl Jam vesus Nirvana contest was completely media created. Nirvana sounds like an updated, more melodic punk band, while Pearl Jam simply aimed to be the Who of the 90s. Different worlds - they both just happened out of Seattle at the same time.
Of course, Nirvana is better, but that's another post.
Zeep! Zeep! Zeep!
i dont know if the nirvana vs. pearl jam contest was media created. i think they just happened to be to very different sounding bands that were part of the same musical movement--peoapl just naturally sided with one. i prefer nirvana, too! laterz,

Perhaps, but I remember reading several magazine articles setting the two in a sort of opposition long before most mainstream listeners were really aware of either band. I'm not sure the media intentionally created the show-down, but I do think they stacked the two somewhat against each other.
Just my view...

Sorry to butt in like that, but I had to say it before Judge is drowned out in dissent :) ...
