Does "acceptable" mean "adequate"? At least half these directors are exceptional, I'd venture. Or are they really just average when you consider the full international field?
"Acceptable" was probably understating the case. What I meant to say was that those are my favorite American directors, but (apparently) I was feeling vague and/or mercurial. "Adequate" doesn't quite do them justice, I'd agree.
this list of film makers is extroardinary. good taste partner.
This list prompts a question for me. In your mind, what qualities make someone be an American filmmaker? Is it just being born in the U.S.? Making films that were financed by American production companies, he is an "American film" maker? living the bulk of one's life in the U.S.?
what gives?
