Rating Scale: 0.0 --> 4.0

Are you rating these movies on a scale of 4 stars?
Yes.
I cannot wait for The Bad Education to come near me.
I second that emotion. If it doesn't get here soon I may just have to buy the non-region one DVD.
Isn't the new Loach called "Ae Fond Kiss"? Or ar you referring to the indie wankfest directed by Fisher Stevens that came out a couple years back?
The Loach film. I think it's called 'Ae Fond Kiss...' in Britain, and 'Just a Kiss' everywhere else.
What was wrong with Notorious?
I had 'Notorious' at [****] for a while (peer pressure!), but decided to lower the rating for two reasons:
1) It's missing the subtext that's present in Hitchcock's greatest works ('Rear Window', 'Vertigo', 'Psycho', 'The Birds', 'Strangers on a Train', 'Shadow of a Doubt', 'Marnie', 'Frenzy' and, to some extent, 'North by Northwest')
2) The beginning's too long, and the film takes a while to get going.
In my mind, 'Notorious' is a bit overrated. But I'd be happy to hear a severe rebuttal to that!
Thanks for the comment.
I don't know, Quack, in my opinion the stairs scene in "Notorious" alone is worth three stars.
The stairs scene is quite great, but the same triangular conflict appears in the auction scene in ‘North by Northwest’ in which Grant’s character raises a fuss and is escorted out of the building (and to safety) by the police. I prefer the ‘North by Northwest’ scene. Also, that there’s a stairway scene in pretty much every Hitchcock film kinda diminishes the 'Notorious' one for me. I know, it ain't fair.
OK, someone has to take up the challenge. Notorious combines a dramatic, emotionally resonant story and complex characters -- not usually Hitchcock’s best points -- with his customary strengths: suspense, ingenious cinematography, and the integration of his favorite themes. The beginning may be slow, but it builds the characters and contrasts with the increasingly nightmarish world of the rest of the movie, a pattern that is repeated in Vertigo but feels far more natural here. The movie boasts at least two great, bravura scenes: the one in which Alicia realizes she is poisoned, and the party. In both, the overt use of the camera reinforces that the story itself is about manipulation. I’ll freely admit there is less subtext here than in, say, Rear Window, but I guess I don’t consider that crucial, since I would rate the subtext-lite North by Northwest as Hitchcock’s second best.
I really like The 39 Steps for which I had to do research to figure out that it is entirely subtext. It makes me feel so sophisticated to like this movie. The black and white helps to impress family members with my taste.
You know, I've seen that movie twice and I'm pretty sure I haven't bothered to pick up on most of the subtext. I always just enjoyed it as a really fast-paced thriller with some comedy and romance elements and lots of fun tricks and plot twists. I guess it just kicks ass in every department.
My favorite thing about The 39 Steps is its tagline: "Handcuffed to the girl who double-crossed him."
Nicely done. I agree, but couldn't have said it so well or efficiently.
I disagree about ‘Notorious’ being emotionally resonant, because Alicia and Devlin aren’t on the screen together long enough to build or convey a convincing relationship. It’s why I think the beginning is wasted. Give me more espionage and less by-the-numbers romance, else give me ‘Rebecca’ (which isn’t a very Hitchcock Hitchcock film). However, I agree that ‘Notorious’ does have a few very good “Hitchcock moments”, and I like your observation about manipulation, which I hadn’t though of and will keep in mind when I watch the film again.
Thanks for writing.
I'm interested to read your thoughts on "The Final Cut." It received generally mediocre-to-poor reviews, but you appear to have deemed it the equal of Hitchcock's "Notorious." :-)
It'll probably be a while until I get to it on the Blog, so here are some quick thoughts:
Many great ideas (some underdeveloped) and themes in the film. Like in 'Code 46', which you didn't like nearly as much as I did, there's so much to think about.
a) The role of memory in our lives, and how memory intsects with objective truth.
b) The notion of a Rememory is interesting in how it reduces people's lives to a few hours of images.
c) Along with that, there's also emphasis on the visual (and aural) memory. What about Touch, Taste, Smell?
d) The idea of a contemporary "surveillence society" was nicely explored.
e) The "cutter" as Film Editor! Because Editors don't get the recognition they deserve, damn it.
The plot had three, ever wider ranging, layers: There was Alan's struggle to find out the truth about his childhood event, the whole conflict between the Industrialist's (whose name I can't remember) true identity and public identity, and then the fate of the Zoe implant in society.
Granted, neither the acting or direction is great. But I think that 'The Final Cut' has enough going for it to make it a memorable Sci-Fi, a minor 'Gattaca' perhaps.
Wha??? "Bad Santa", a mere two stars? A defense will be necessary for this, you realize... :-)
'Bad Santa' forced me to change my Rating System. But, eventually, a defence will come!
Love that you include nation of origin! That's something I really wish I'd included when keeping track of the movies I watch. In fact, with this reminder, I'm going to include it with all movies I see from now on (in my personal database, prolly not on Listology).
Can't wait to read your thoughts on the new "Assault on Precinct 13." Have you seen the original?
I haven't seen Carpenter's version. Not sure if that means I overrate the remake, or don't fully appreciate it. Have you seen both?
Haven't seen the remake yet. I liked Carpenter's original, but not as much as some people. The scene with the girl from "Escape to Witch Mountain" is a classic.
I was going to catch 'In Good Company' in cinema's. What didn't you like about it? btw thanks for reccommending Bad Education, your 4.0 rating is spot on.
Dull and sappy. The dialogue is some of the worst I've heard in a while, too. The characters too often say exactly what's on their minds. And whoever says that 'In Good Company' is good satire is just wrong.
I also have a strong dislike of Dennis Quaid and, in general, actors who, as they grow older, start making Harrison Ford-like facial grimaces.
Life Aquatic only 2.5? i've beena fan of Wes Anderson for a while and this is his best IMO. i thought it was by far the funniest.
Regarding "Bobby Long." Haven't seen the film in its entirety, but John Travolta should know better than to use "y'all" when speaking to a single person. Guess he didn't spend enough time hanging out in my neighborhood before filming. Speaking of which, I only want to see this because it was shot mostly in one of my old neighborhoods.
P.S.: Is it hard to write about movies that you saw weeks or months ago? I know it would be for me. :-)
Sometimes I jot down notes while I'm watching a film, or quickly after, so even when I write about the film later I have some information that jogs my memory (I'm a geek, I know). Characters names, and other facts, I look up on the IMDB.
As to my opinion of a film, I'm usually better able to argue my point a few weeks after watching it. Especially if it's a film I liked. I'm almost certain that my review of 'Sideways', for example, will be better than it would have been had I written it the night I saw the film. Most of the time, when I finish watching something good I don't really know why I liked it (if it's bad, then it's easier). I guess that makes my reviews much colder than those of other reviewers, but I don't like to let the experience of watching a film overshadow what I thought of it. And if a certain element catches my interest, such as the use of music in 'The Motorcycle Diaries', then I remeber it for quite a long time. My ratings also drop ('Million Dollar Baby' is going down every day!) more often than they rise ('The Aviator' is a rare one going up). In other words, I'm not one for emotion. I'd rather a film make me think than feel. And the more time elapses since I've seen the film, the less I remember the emotions and the more I begin to understand it.
Phew! Rant over.
Well, I admire your ability to write substantive reviews of every movie you see. Wish I could do the same.
1.5 for "Kung Fu Hustle"??? You outta yo' mind!!!! :)
i know you don't like Life Aqautic and Tenenbaums. i read your review of rushmore, it was very good. Have you seen his first movie Bottle Rocket?
Nope, haven't seen it. Do you recommend?
oh yes. its actually lightest of his movies and brightest. its not really depressing like some of his can be (mainly RT) but its still character driven and deep
"Alone in the Dark"? Why?
It was a sadistic impulse coupled with the desire to see if it actually is that bad. And is it ever!
You like Hitchcock a bunch. Why? He is not that bad, but he never dove into the demon world. That would make his movies a lot scarier! lol
I think I like Hitchcock because he didn't dive into the demon world.
So Attack the Gas Station! aint all that, huh? A shame, cuz it's such a great title. What was wrong with it? Too much demon-world-delving?
I coulda told you it was crap. No idea where its reputation came from.
I shoulda known you coulda told me it was crap!
Does it actually have a reputation, tho? I think it played at SIFF several years ago, and for some reason I always see it when I'm at Scarecrow video, so for me it was always that movie with the cool title that I should see but never do (and now, never will).
It's one of those films that won over a bunch of people during its fest run, and those who've seen it generally speak highly of its loose-limbed anarchy. Personally, I find it befuddling that such an awkward and ramshackle enterprise should find such favor while the director's subsequent (and far better) "Kick the Moon" sank without anyone in the West noticing.
Depends on your sense of funny and, I guess, knowledge of Korean society and politics. I don't share the film's sense of humour and didn't understand a wink of it's satire. Might be like one of those Czech (Forman's The Fireman's Ball) or Polish (Piwowski's Rejs) Communist-era films that are a whole lot better if you understand the context in which they were made. But I still get a feeling I'm giving Attack the Gas Station! too much credit.
"The Pacifier." Why?
This is fun! ;-)
Sometimes, I just don't know anymore...
Whoah, that's the lowest rating I've seen for the new Woody Allen. Care to explain?
I hope to have a longer review of it up soon, but there are quite a few things I didn't like about it.
1) The rather trite idea behind the film, that tragedy and comedy are always mixed, or in the "eye of the bolder", is undermined because the funny segments of the film aren't funny and the tragic parts either over-the-top or kept offscreen. They're alike because they're both bland.
2) Allen's touch at directing and usually pretty good cinematography is painfully absent from this film. It lacks style. And it's edited down in a way that makes it a mess. One of the first shots of the film is of the exterior of a restaurant that then begins to snake toward the entrance and then inside. Except, instead of completing the fluid motion, there's a jarring, very weird, fade (or is it a dissolve?) to a bunch of people at a table inside a restaurant. Seems the editors either didn't know what they were doing, or were struggling to cut down the film and ruined whatever rhythm it had.
3) The ensuing, and subsequent, conversations sound too much like Allen discussing "issues" with himself. I know, this happens in pretty much every Allen film, but it was never this painfully obvious. Even The Pacifier was less stilted.
4) So much talking... and so much of it is boring. Where's the wit? Must be back in the 90's somewhere.
5) Acting's much worse than Allen usually gets. Other than Will Ferrell, and a few of the supporting actors and actresses, the cast stumbles through. Radha Mitchell sulks and "emotes" all the time, while the others just sound awkward talking about classical music and theatre and dining in bistros. But I put the blame for that on the characters as much as the actors. Still, Amanda Peet is not Michael Caine or Mia Farrow (though Mitchell does kind of look like her).
6) The story's a rehash of the Mickey Sachs (Woody Allen) half of Hannah and Her Sisters, but it lacks the warmth of that film. Melinda and Melinda just ends, without ever finishing, and isn't supported enough by memorable or fresh characters to be satisfying. Most of what we find out about the characters in Melinda and Melinda is because of what they, or others, say about them. In good Woody Allen pictures, the characters are revealed and evolve because of what they do or how they react.
Uh oh... I'm rambling. But I really did dislike this film.
Where's the wit? Must be back in the 90's somewhere.
Or eighties. Or seventies. Except for "Sweet and Lowdown," his late 90s/early 00s work has been excruciatingly bad.
i can't disagree with anything qc said about melinda and melinda, although i just thought it was all either to a much lesser degree or a positive instead of a negative... and i stand by anything else as one of allen's better movies.
Just curious: how many Allen movies have you seen? :-)
13... and i have anything else ranked 6th and melinda 7th
Wow, that's a bad rating for "Melinda and Melinda". I loved it. I did think it was witty and funny and smart and all that jazz. The acting was, imho, very good. I thought Radha Mitchell was outstanding. The script was so good, imho. How objects popped up in both stories yet were used so differently in each one, like the genie lamp for example.
Where's the wit and humour? I, for example, loved one of the first scenes where Melinda comes into the apartment and says she needs to throw up, one encourages it "that's the best thing you can do." And then Will Ferrell chimes in "no no no no, not on the carpet, that's a new carpet, go to the bathroom." I loved it. Or maybe even one of the very first lines where the guy asks if dinner is ready because he is almost out of "obsequious banter". I also just loved the ending. Had me leaving the cinema with a smile. I can't wait for the DVD to be released to watch it again.
i loved it too... any movie that can make someone trying to jump out of a window seem so sad one minute and have me laughing uncontrollably the next is great in my book... i think he really pulled off the concept.
If you liked the film, I'd recommend you Steinbeck's excellent novel Of Mice and Men. That means if you haven't yet read it.
Thanks, I'm looking forward to diving into the book sometime soon. Any other Steinbeck you'd recommend?
Wow, Quack, I just realized that you gave "A Love Song For Bobby Long" the same rating as "The Life Aquatic." Can't say I agree with that.
Hehe. I don't think I quite agree with myself on that one, either. But I enjoyed Love Song more than a I probably should have (I blame the weather and/or my mood that day!) and wasn't impressed enough by Life Aquatic to give it a 3.0. I still think that Anderson's is a better film, but there was something endearing, in a schmaltzy fairy tale way, about Love Song. But if I had to pick a film to watch again, there'd be no hesitation. Life Aquatic.
...in a schmaltzy fairy tale way...
And, that's exactly what "Bobby Long" is. People in New Orleans don't speak with exagerated southern accents. And they don't have names like Purslane Hominy Will. And they don't practice voodoo. And a lot them (like me) actually get up every morning and go to work.
You're ruining my illusions! Shh!
My rating for the movie would have been even lower than the 36 I gave it, if not for cinematographer Elliot Davis, who made some of my favorite neighborhoods look even better than they naturally do.
