Here's the deal. I want to make a Listology top ten for 2003. How? In stages.
This is the nomination phase. Please nominate your five FAVORITE (spare me any "this film was the best but I didn't like it - I want the ones you did like - and no more than five, or I'll be forced to ignore you!) films of 2003. I'll be using allmovie.com for dating purposes, so please make sure your five films have a date of 2003 there. There's no need to order your nominations.
I'll gather up the top twenty or so in a a few weeks, and we'll vote on the best!
This is an experiment, given, but I'm very curious to see the results! I'll keep a running tab above.

By the way, if you don't want your list of nominations to be public, feel free to email your list, and I'll add your votes to the total.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
1.Russian Ark
2.Big Fish
3.Spider
4.Bad Santa
5.House of a 1000 corpses
And here is my opinoin....:)
Thanks! Unfortunately, only Big Fish and Bad Santa qualify as 2003 films (the others were 2002 movies). I'll add those. Would you like to nominate three more?
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
I had a feeling :(
Ok,then 3.Finding Nemo and 4.Anything Else I'll be back with the 5th.
Groovy. Thanks!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Great idea! My nominees:
Finding Nemo
Kill Bill: Vol. 1
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
X2: X-Men United
I'm actually not going to see RotK until Monday, but I'm confident in its top 5 placement. I'm always hesitant to make a list like this until the following year though, as there are still tons of 2003 movies I haven't seen. Here are the only other '03 movies I've caught: Anger Management, Daddy Day Care, Daredevil, Final Destination 2, The Hulk, The Hunted, Identity, The Italian Job, The Jungle Book 2, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, A Mighty Wind, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Piglet's Big Movie, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Recruit, Seabiscuit, Shanghai Knights, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines
Just curious, why allmovie.com and not imdb for the dates?
Also, I'd love to participate in your "albums" version of this list, but I'm woefully unqualified.
Force of habit. I use All Movie more often, and I find it easier to look up a film on it quickly. Additionally, I haven't ran across a firm statement by IMDB about how they date films, where as I have found one for All Movie.
I think it might be interesting to revisit this with next year's poll (if I do one) to see how a year and more exposure changes our votes!
Thanks!
Shalom, y'all!

So are you saying that you're going to have us re-do the Top 10 of 2003 at a later date to see how the list is affected when we catch up on the rest of the movies of 2003 that we haven't seen yet?
The reason I ask is because I know there's probably a decent chance that only 2 movies in my current Favorite 5 which will still be there after I see all of the movies of 2003 worth seeing.
That is the idea I'm toying with. How does it sound?
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
I like it!
RE: The year in IMDB
http://www.imdb.com/updates?update=title
"the year of first public screening"
Thanks!
I knew it had to be on the site somewhere, but I couldn't find it.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Well, there are a good many acclaimed 2003 films I haven't seen, but hopefully everyone else will fill in the gaps.
I'd nominate...
1. The Station Agent
2. Finding Nemo
3. Swimming Pool
4. Kill Bill: Volume 1
5. Mystic River
Thanks for the nominations!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Alright, I received an email entry (thanks!), and it included Angels in America, a made-for-HBO film. I thought about it, and I finally decided to include it since it is a 2003 film, even if it wasn't a theatrical release. I hope this is cool with everybody. If not, let me know your feelings! It is certainly not set in stone.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Alright, here's my unordered list so far:
Elephant
Kill Bill: Volume 1
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Lost in Translation
Peter Pan
Thanks, AAA!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Finding Nemo
LotR: Return of the King
Partial list because, sadly, I have not seen many of the movies that I think would make the list if I had seen them. I'm (hopefully) seeing Big Fish tonight, so I may have to add that after I see it.
And I really wanted to add Capturing the Friedmans, which IMDb list as 2003, but All Movie Guide lists it as 2002. : (
Yeah, I'm sorta hoping possibly to catch that this weekend also. Thanks for the entries!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Yep, I liked it a lot. Can you please add a vote from me for Big Fish? Thanks!
Done!
I didn't get to catch Big Fish yet. My wife and I wanted to catch a film together, and we noticed that Lost in Translation just returned to town again. We caught that instead.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
OOO! I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on Lost in Translation. I really liked it, but I can't help feel that it's being overpraised by critics. It's very good, but not amazing, by any means.
My wife's needing the computer soon, so I probably won't get to write about it until Monday. Don't hate me, but I'm afraid I'm with those over-excited critics - I really, really loved it.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Absolutely no problem. I really liked the film, and I'm happy that such a deserving cast and director are getting attention...it's just a case of slight critical overexposure for me, I guess.
That said, it'll be featured prominently on my top ten and in my awards list.
I think I only voted for 3 movies, so can I add Lost in Translation? I loved it.
Well, since it is my favorite film of last year... :)
Consider it done.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Here's my three (I didn't see that many movies in the theatre this year):
1. Bubba Ho-Tep
2. Finding Nemo
3. Winged Migration
Sad news - Both All Movie and IMDB list Bubba Ho-Tep as 2002 and Winged Migration as 2001. I'm adding your voice to the Nemo choir right now!
Thanks, and sorry!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
You know, I knew that about Winged Migration, but forgot. Didn't know that about Bubba Ho-Tep. The travails of making a film are only followed by more in the distribution game, eh?
L, I have a dilemma. If I were to choose my favorite movies of 2003 of what I've seen of 2003 so far they would be probably be...
Elf (2003)
Finding Nemo (2003)
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
School of Rock (2003)
That being said, there are a metric ton of 2003 movies that I've yet to see and many of them I think have a decent chance of cracking my top 5.
These include...
21 Grams (2003)
American Splendor (2003)
Bad Santa (2003)
Big Fish (2003)
Dirty Pretty Things (2003)
Lost in Translation (2003)
Peter Pan (2003)
to name but a few.
Do you think this will affect the veracity of the top 10?
Nah. That's why I was thinking of running this again at the end of the year. We'll see how the results change (or don't) as we all get a chance to see more on video.
Thanks!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
OK, please include the 5 I listed.
Oops. I already did. Ah, well. At least I'm right now, even if I was wrong before, or something like that.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
The Five Most Entertaining Films I've Seen All Year Are:
Kill Bill Vol. 1
Big Fish
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
School of Rock
Matchstick Men
Finding Nemo was great, but School of Rock really needed to be on this list!
Gottcha. Thanks!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
I'll add my five shillings for my faves of 2003, if ya don't mind:
Kill Bill, Vol. 1
School of Rock
Return of the King
28 Days Later
Angels in America
Lost in Translation
I still haven't seen 21 Grams - it's playing at the local Fine Arts cinema, and I hope to catch it pretty soon.
Cool, but the limit's at five. Which flick do you wish to bump off?
Your list looks awfully close to my own at the moment! (I haven't seen the new Angels in America, but I read the play back in 95, so I'm anticipating a DVD release!)
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Oops, no wonder I went to summer school twice to make up math, I can't count! Bump off 28 Days Later. I really liked this film a whole bunch, but I'm been put off by some of the negative commentary from some folks here in this site. Makes me wonder if I saw the same film.
I was lucky enough to see Angels on Broadway some ten years ago. I fretted HBO's version would lose some of the vitality of the play, but I dare say it far exceeds it. The only filmed version of a play that matches or exceeds the original play is perhaps Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
Oh, and my sis works for HBO. She says they're planning a DVD release of Angels, but there's no release date yet. I will definitely buy it when it comes out!
Gotcha. Thanks!
I'm very glad (if not surprised) to hear about the DVD. Us folks who don't get HBO are starting to feel left out!
I envy your chance to see it on Broadway.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Hey, you wouldn't happen to know if HBO is going to release a DVD of The Wire? I've been wanting to see that show since jgandcag recommended it.
I believe it's out on DVD already, but don't quote me on that.
I had a flicker of hope, as it comes back in Amazon's search results, but this is what is says:
Availability: NOT YET RELEASED: The studio is currently not producing this title on DVD, but to be notified when it is available, enter your e-mail address at right. You'll also be voting for this release; we'll let the studio know how many customers are waiting for this title.
At the HBO store the only merchandise I could find for the show was clothes. Ah well! I'm sure they'll get around to it someday.
I'll ask my sister; I'm sure she'll know when The Wire's coming out on DVD.
1.Return of the King
2.Finding Nemo
3.Lost In Translation
4.Mystic River
5.Last Samurai
Thanks!
They've been added. Thanks!
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Hey, like many people i think this list could change once I've seen some of the other 2003 movies but so far
Pirates of the caribbean
Return of the king
Love actually
Finding Nemo
Peter Pan
Have to mention that the two matrix films were pretty disappointing. Still love the first one though.
Thanks! I've added your five.
I think I'll let the nominations continue through the weekend, then well put the top nominees to a vote!
I guess I need to go ahead and put my top five up here soon.
Shalom, y'all!
L. Bangs
Alright, my five:
Lost in Translation
Kill Bill Vol. 1
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
X2: X-Men United
The School of Rock
Time for phase 2!
Thanks all for the great nominees!
Shalom, y'all!
