A strange, very individual sort of selection by David Meeker, BFI archivist, as in 1998. Films up to 1981 only. Just over 360 in fact. And a few dates may be questionable compared with imdb. But that's how it is in my BFI leaflet.

Well, it's not exactly a poll, more like one man's very personal selection with plenty of surprising inclusions + omissions. All the more interesting for that, but the BFI have done well since then to put an end to the 360 being shown in repeated cycles, as so many great films are missing. It should open up a world of films, eg previously overlooked early Chinese stuff (which i've been unable to see). I'm not sure what theory i can apply to the selection.

I could say that there are now more good films from a wider range of countries than ever before, so the gap since 1981 is a pity, but i don't believe technical advances necessarily make for great films. The soul and intellect behind them is what matters and in my opinion no current directors are reaching the heights achieved by Mizoguchi, Tarkovsky, Renoir (and several others). Any list that promotes earlier and neglected international films + masters is to be applauded. Unfortunately too many publications' lists and polls of the public simply reinforce the dominance of Hollywood and reflect limited viewing experience, so are of no real benefit i think.

I could say obsession with lists (mine too) is no substitute for insights + deeper study, but aiming for a canon and promoting world cinema is still a very useful exercise. Jonathan Rosenbaum's book Essential Cinema makes the case for canons and has his own interesting list but also has plenty of informed and thoughtful articles. The two aspects can run side by side.

O.K, well in the 360 there aren't many films by female directors (partly due to his cut-off date). He would have done better to dispense with some by Ford, to make room for missing/under-represented directors. Ozu and Rohmer should certainly have had more.
