A couple winters back, we experienced a catastrophic ice storm that left the entire region without power and heat for days (in February I may add). I was out for 11 days. During this time I kept warm by shopping. Also, I started to think about unexpected catastrophic events like the ice storm. This is about the time Tom Ridge started talking about Homeland security and www.ready.gov I thought to myself, sure I do not expect to be a victim of a terrorist threat, and I do not want to live my life in fear, but what can it hurt getting this stuff in one place. So I put my kit together. I keep it in my wine cellar, with some extras- like more drinks, 5 gallons of water, 3 more cans of bbq and crackers, 2 aspect packages of soy milk, a hand crank radio flashlight, lanterns (Kerosene, coleman and battery operated), directions for Coleman, and extra Mantles, flashlights, a propane hot plate, propane space heater, and fuel. US Marine Poncho (with Liner), US Marine 1/2 shelter pup, US Marine sleeping bag, bed roll pad, US Marine Alice pack, WW2 Mess Kit, 2 Army canteens (1 with pan). An Army Folding Shovel.

While Not technically part of the response, but there is beer and wine too. The kit is compact - and ready to go, 6 x 8 x 18 inches big. I labled the main kit my Ready.gov.box

needs;, silverware set, more propane and kerosone Waterproof matches. Bug spray. Sunscreen. Extra Pills for 5 days. Aspirins, Nitro Glycerin pills. Extra lasix for all the sodium in the food. MREs. a packed suitcase. Tarps and rope. A tool kit, although I can dedicate my "day of kevin" box, which is nearby or the all-in-one emergancy lantern in my truck, as it. I could keep my silver and gold down there too for when society breaks down and only hard currency works --?!?!?--
