Author Comments:

Anyway, too many of these books I already own, and I know I will enjoy them, but I haven't gotten around to them yet. Victorian, adventure, gothic, and early-twentieth century novels seem to dominate the list, but the period from about 1840-1930 fascinates me.

Any comments or recommendations in the same vein?

I would say you could enjoy

Howard's End, Return of the Solider, Heat of the Day, Mrs. Dalloway and Keep the Aspidistra Flying .

All right up your alley I would think on the latter end of the time period.

The Modern British Novel

Thanks for the recommendations; I actually haven't read any of these. A Passage to India is the first Forster novel I've read, and I'm really enjoying it, so Howard's End is probably in my future.

A couple of these I haven't heard of, so I need to look up Heat of the Day and Keep the Aspidistra Flying.

First one is Elizabeth Bowen and the second by George Orwell.

OMG, I’ve just read She on your list. An archetype, I have seen/read so much rip off of it... To read if you are in the adventure-type-of-book mood. I like the complete title of this novel: She Who Must Be Obeyed. 4/5

Suggestions? The Prisoner Of Chillon by Lord Byron… Short stories of Edgar Allan Poe or Oscar Wilde? I have no idea, I guess I didn't read a lot of this type yet.

I love She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed's full name as well--those kooky Victorians, terrified of strong women!

I love Poe stories, and I've enjoyed the plays I've read by Wilde, but I haven't read any short stories--I'll check them out.

Short stories I really like from Wilde:
The Nightingale and the Rose
The Devoted Friend
