This list is sweet, although surprisingly limited in terms of historical scope. Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Frans Hals, non-representational painters in general, etc not making the cut? As some specific suggestions for your taste: I think painters like Eakins, Gorky and Sargent would be up your alley.
That said, I really dig some of the stuff here. Rooms by the Sea, Sunlight, The Gulf Stream, Office in a Small City, Winged Figure, The Magpie and Evening Lounge (never seen this, will have to check more of this artists work out) are some of my favorites from this list.
Thanks for the suggestions.
There are a few Rembrandts I like, especially the helix philosopher, reading philosopher, and mill (I prefer the brown sky to the blue one). I don't like Michelangelo or Hals.
The other 3 I don't remember seeing before (except for Eakins' Study in the human motion). I much prefer Pollock to Gorky. I like some of Eakins' rough black and white paintings, and Sergent's Rosina is magical - I may add that later.
Rooms by the sea's sharp shadows away from the door and window is just creepy, the other room intriguing, and the sea on the doorstep blows me away - especially coming from Hopper. I have small prints of it both at home and work, and love them to bits.
