Author Comments:

I was reading today of the passing of director Kon Ichikawa and remembered that he directed another version of his beautiful The Burmese Harp in the 1980s. Then I wondered how many other directors did remakes of their own films, and came up with these. Anybody else who should be on here?

ETA: Updated with info from this IMDB link (thanks to dgeiser13).

Do you really think Evil Dead 2 is a remake of Evil Dead?

I haven't seen the original myself, but I could've sworn I've read in a few spots that ED2 was basically a remake of the original with more money and better production. Not the case?

I've seen them both and 2 didn't seem like a remake to me. Although it did have some overlapping storyline. So I look around and found this, Evil Dead 2: Remake or Not, from Wikipedia which is a synopsis of Raimi's own words from the DVD commentary track. That explains the overlapping story. So I would say, no.

Great idea for a list! The only pair I've seen are Sluizer's two versions of The Vanishing--the American version isn't too bad, but the original is such a great film. Question: would you say that the remake is usually more accomplished than the original (because of higher budgets, access to better actors, etc.)?

Johnny Waco

You mean remakes in general? In some cases they get more money and more famous talent, but that doesn't always translate into something worthy. With Sluizer's efforts, the original was great storytelling, whereas the remake, from what little I've seen, was pretty weak all around.

No, not remakes in general (which are often inferior), but specifically remakes by the same director as the original. I wonder if, when the same director mounts a remake, if the resulting film tends to be more accomplished or if something vital is often lost in covering the same ground again. For instance, with Sluizer, what caused the bigger-budget, English-language version of The Vanishing to be so inferior to the original? Pressure from a studio to be more accesible?

Johnny Waco

Ah, that's what I thought you were getting at. In some of these cases the directors were probably asked to remake their earlier films because they achieved some level of success in their environment (note that a few of these resulted in an English language remake, like Sluizer's), and for others it was likely a case of the director wondering how he'd handle the story in a more contemporary setting (thinking of Capra and Hitchcock here). Either way, it's like trying to get lightning to strike twice. It's gotta be pretty difficult to replicate a particular mix of acting talent, writing, directing, and maybe even the catering a second time.

Strangely enough IMDB has a keyword tag for this which I didn't expect to find: Remake by Original Director. I love IMDB.

Man....I don't know if I should be relieved or pissed.

No need to be pissed. I have a few speciality lists of my own on here that are easily resolved by a nice IMDB keyword. Hasn't stopped me from plugging on. :-)

Neato. There are a lot more of these than I thought.

What about Michael Bay? Different plot, same 'splosions.
