You've been on quite the Zhang Yimou kick, which of course makes me a happy boy. You don't really have that many left to watch at this point, do you?

I really need to rewatch Shanghai Triad. I only saw it once when it first came out, and remember thinking it was a lesser (but still very good) work from Zhang. Many other respected viewers (including you) seem to think better of it.

It looks like I've knocked down about half of Yimou's films so far, and of the ones which aren't terribly difficult to find, I think I've got just Qui Ju and Not One Less to go through. I managed to acquire a copy of House Of Flying Daggers recently which I hope to check out this week.

You know, this Zhang Yimou guy, it turns out he's pretty good!

I seriously considered giving Shanghai Triad the full five star rating, being so knocked out by the idea 1930s Chinese gangster story (and because Ebert didn't seem to like it). The cinematography was fantastic, and Gong Li isn't so bad to look at, either. I think I may have to revise my ratings soon, since I have Hero as the only Yimou w/ five stars (it totally rocks, but I'd have to say that Red Lantern is my favorite thus far).

And of course, the Yimou kick is due to your praises, so thanks!

:-) You're welcome! And I owe you for some of the Kurosawa I've been taking in lately, so thanks to you as well!

I'll be curious to see where you rank HofD. The action is getting universal praise, but everything else is getting mixed reviews. I've resisted the region-free DVD temptation, as I'd really like to see that one on the big screen, especially having only seen Hero on my pathetic little television.
