Search is back

As everyone knows I had disabled search at one point to improve site stability. Since then life has been in the way and I have not found the time to fix things up. It may still be a bit before I get a handle on this, and in the meantime people have been clamoring to have search return, so today I turned it back on. We may experience occasional downtime but I hope to keep it as minimal as possible. If anyone notices the site is down, feel free to email me or ping listology on Twitter.

There is one other item on my short list, which is getting a more reliable comment notification system in place. Several people have expressed frustration about this and I am currently researching alternatives.

Thanks for your patience everyone!

Oh. Well, filtering searches by users, type, and tag are not there right now. At least not like they used to be. So I thought you had removed that part of the feature.

I have been successful filtering by tag using a boolean AND, but that does not work for type.

I use Google Chrome on a WinXP system. But to be thorough, I tried it on both Firefox and Internet Explorer. Same result on each of them.

This for your information, not a complaint.

Oh! That was an oversight on my part. Those features are back, I didn't realize I needed to explicitly turn them back on when I turned search back on. Thanks for pointing it out.

Thanks! Good luck with the rest of the stuff. I'll shut up now.

One thing you might try is to disable the auto-match process. It seems to get in the way of the search more than help it. Its a cute bell/whistle, but without stability, it seems more a drain on the resources. Maybe you could try a simpler search add-on.

The big problem is the service I am using to index content, the auto-match thing actually adds very little overhead. I can move to a simpler indexing service, however it would result in an immense reduction in functionality. The ability to filter searches by user, by type, by tag, and to see related content, all come from this service and would go away without it. These are pretty compelling features and I would really like to find a way to keep the existing search stable. It's just a matter of finding a clear day or two to make it happen.

Cool!

Bless you, bless you. Thank you so very much. Hooray Hooray Hooray! You are my hero!
