My final paper for my American Studies class is on national memory, and I've chosen to write about Dylan going electric in 65. The paper has to be about 15 pages and should cover the immediate impact of the event, how it impacted culture, and also how it is remembered or studied now. Also, my professor requested that for topics on music we make a CD that would illustrate some key points from our paper. If anyone has any ideas for the paper or the CD, or knows of any resources out there I should try to get ahold of, I'd really appreciate it. I'm pretty excited about the paper; it should be a lot of fun to write!

This sounds really terrific, good luck in everything! You might want to get a copy of the Newport Folk Festival show in 1965 where he went electric for the first time, with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. My copy of the show is of pretty good quality, but I'm sure there must be something even better. I've also got a copy of a show a few weeks later at the Hollywood Bowl where he played an acoustic and electric set. Talking about the infamous "Judas" incident during the 1966 tour might be good, too.
There are several (hundred, I'm sure) articles talking about Dylan going electric that could be of some use. I'll look through some of my copies of MOJO to see if there's anything worth recommending.
Good luck!
Thanks so much! I did a search in the library records online and four pages of results came up! So if you find any articles that could steer me in the right direction, that'd be fabulous. Thanks again!
Btw, I haven't forgotten! I checked around and only found a Q special edition on Bob w/ an article full of first-hand accounts from a bunch of folkies who where there. For books, it looks like No Direction Home by Robert Shelton (published 1986) does a good job in covering the event (it's a standard biography). For recordings, I can recommend this site for a listing of recordings from the Newport Festival from 1965 and the September 3 Hollywood Bowl show, which I believe is when he started doing acoustic and electric sets in concert (I may be wrong there). I have copies of Folk Rogue and From Newport To The... if you think you might be needing those.
Thanks, Macheath! Look for an email from me shortly.
