Many house and disco tracks are praised for all the stuff they manage to throw into the mix. What's remarkable about these records is how much they leave out. While all of the above do not follow an exact formula, the basic pattern is something like this: quantized kick and snare drum; sizzling hi-hat, loud in the mix and playing 8th notes; stupid-enervating (preferably "cheap"-sounding) keyboard or bass hook ("or" beats "and"); repeated vocal sample, preferably black, preferably female, soulful-spilling-over-into-shrill.

I'm trying to gather enough of this stuff together to make a comp...feel free to enlighten me. (No Kraftwerk, please!)
