Overrated English Bands
- Overrated English Bands
- I'm with you:
- LED ZEPPELIN: Overrated definetly but you could put together an album of good tunes
- THE BEATLES: a great band BUT SGT Peppers is a piece of shit - and yes it did influence a lot of bands and their versions of Sgt Peppers were crap also
- RADIOHEAD - rubish, no worthwhile features.
- ELTON JOHN - spot on - without Bernie there aint anything left
- SEX PISTOLS: without a doubt the most overrated band in punk and maybe history - 4 good songs do not make a great band.
- COLDPLAY: Rubbish
- STONE ROSES: Rubbish
- DEF LEPPARD: I thought they got knocked a lot by the tastemakers
Could I add to the list:
PINK FLOYD- like being on valium but worse ... especially after Syd left.
THE WH0 - are you kidding me - a couple of good tracks and some good live performances luckily captured on film and thats it - otherwise its just power chords and riffs ( for 40 years !!!!) - and people who defend Townshend never cotton onto the fact that when the scribes ut together their lists of all the great guitarists (and the usual claptrap appear Page, beck, Clapton etc Townshend usually does not make the list)
ERIC CLAPTON - he's from Tooting Beck or somewhere not Chicago or the Mississippi Delta and worse and unforgivable - he is extremely dull
THE SMITHS - fashion and attitude and a couple of good ( but not great) tunes does not a great band make
ELVIS COSTELLO- dull with a capital D
ALL ENGLISH PROG ROCK- nuff said
BILLY BRAGG - he's only barely decent when he covering US folk ( and otherwise backed by Wilco) - although i still doubt his sincerity
THE STRANGLERS - As boring as you can get
JESUS AND MARY CHAIN - Come on let it go - almost all of it sucks so hard and yes again its dull.
QUEEN - agreat frontman and some brilliant songs but otherwise always very patchy
THE ROLLING STONES: some competent above average early LPs, some (3) great legendary LPs between 1968-72 and one or two good songs in the last 30 years...
PAUL WELLER - some the Jam stuff was fun, some of the Style Council stuff you can tap your feet to - olo = shit. A musical chameleon without the brains of a Bowie.
THE CLASH - what is it with the Clash -has anyone ver sat down and tried to listen to Sandanista all the way through - its utter shit -another band with half a good LP and fashion stylist ( the rebellious thing always appeals to teens)
SMALL FACES - hey they got better when they were Rod's back up band.
YARDBIRDS - see Clapton above.
ALL OF THOSE GREAT NEW SAVIOURS OF UK MUSIC - the NME have been trotting out for the last year (Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, etc)
ANYTHING BRITPOP - although now the UK press are
even turning against them
So what is the problem with ENGLISH music:
- it revolves around fashion and looks and not music
- it never grew organically from the environment - it's all about getting US music and ripping it off ( rock, jazz, blues, country ie: Look at Eric Clapton playing the blues he's from Tooting Beck or somewhere not Chicago or the Mississippi Delta)
- the old chip on the shoulder because they know that its not their music ( thats why Australian, Swedish, etc rock acts can sound so refreshing because there is no chip and they dont mind paying their respects to US music .... as the Beatles did)
- the UK music press - are the most self centered "the sun never sets on the British empire" nobs writing ( the NME turns out the next great UK act every week - PS: being on the cover of the NME is the kiss of death) - and they have the loyalty of scorpions - by the way the sun has set.
- US Rock journalists who get caught up in the above - usually ones from the 60s who didnt like rock until the Beatles and Lennon-McCartney taught everyone to write ( apparently there was nothing before them) - music is about the music - if you want to write as an art form publish poetry
- Generally POOR live shows - they always look like they are playing for themselves and that we (the public)are very lucky to be part of their experience whereas US bands put on a show because we (the public) have paid our money and when UK bands do rock out it always looks forced
- English music fans who are not in England, usually University students who think they are cuttng edge and so different and alternative because they listen to English music.
ENDNOTE: There are exceptions to the all of the above - afterall I love The Kinks ( who are lot more respected in the US then in the UK - even Village Green - their most english themed LP sold more in the US than in the UK !)

except for some Floyd (Dark Side sucks!), Rolling Stones (only 2 GOOD albums; everything else is average, as an album, but they do have great singles: not much after '72), and Led Zeppelin (they are a better band than some of their recordings show them to be, but i can see how you understand them to be overrated)...THIS IS AN AWESOME LIST:
The beatles, radiohead, sex pistols (except for maybe 2-3 songs) the stone roses (though i think they are ok, that is it, they are average at best!), Eric Clapton is a very mediocre guitar player and is the absolute worst of all the GREAT guitar players of ALL-TIME: he has never done anything on the guitar that should have led to him being called God, ever, and i have seen too much footage and have heard too much audio by him that i am convinced that most people do not know what the blues is SUPPOSED to sound like; and Costello (punk? or pop? hmmm..., and he has an AMAZING voice, just astonishing!); The Clash i do like a lot, but at the same time they are extremely overrated ("The Only Band That Matters" is a bit much, even for bands like The Doors or the Velvet Underground); i just re-listened to Psychocandy and that was a major disappointment; i could go on and on...i will not.
