  • Favorite

  • Exceptional

  • Morphine: At Your Request (released 2009)
  • Elegi: Varde - classical – also check out Sistereis and another album is due out in 2010 titled Bansull
  • Very Good

  • Peter Walker: Long Lost Tapes (1970, release 2009) - get Rainy Day Raga before this, if you are inclined to get anything by him.
  • Van Morrison: Astral Weeks Live in Hollywood - the composition alone is worth a 3/5 (RYM).
  • Andrew Douglas Rothbard: Exodusarabesque - how did this go overlooked being released in February? How did pitchfork not review it and give it a 3π/№ 10? This album sounds like another Animal Collective album without the harmonies – he tries to hide his vocals in the electronic goo as much as possible. When he does sing it is low and heavily dubbed focusing more on the various cuts of sounds he puts together to make each song. this is very much an electronic album, with beginnings in other rock genres like folk, progressive, psychedelic and raga. this acts as a nice summary of the decade. his 2006 album Abandoned Meander is another pretty good album with less electronics and more acoustic guitar driven, with electronic treatments. You can listen to the entire album HERE, at last.fm.
  • Jeans Wilder: Antiques - this is one of the most depressing albums I have heard in some time; the music never really gets going, and the singer sounds like he is haunting an orphanage with listless nursery rhymes and unintelligible lyrics that sit in the air like a mist and cannot seem to fall to the ground.
  • Robert Wyatt: Radio Experiment Rome, February 1981 (1981, released 2009)
  • A Journey Down The Well: Sorry Monsters, I Have To Grow - the “Bush Horror Movie Soundtrack” (samples of gunfire and death statistics from the Iraq War and in general any conflict of the last 8 years) was an annoying departure from the elegant, and quirky minimal classical music that played before and after – i do not think that kind of theory of music works, at least not for me. with that aside, there is not much other wasted space or wasted energy.
  • Azita: How Will You?
  • The Naked Future: Gigantomachia - jazz
  • Tim Hecker: An Imaginary Country
  • Akron/Family: Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free
  • Built To Spill: There Is No Enemy - I like this band
  • St. Vincent: Actor
  • Throbbing Gristle: The Third Mind Movements
  • Cloaks: Versus Grain
  • Good

  • Daniel Johnston: Is And Always Was
  • Natural Snow Buildings: Shadow Kingdom - i am wary about this album and ambivalent about this band. they need to shorten their pieces, or focus more and not tarry as they do; and i am not a fan who has all their recordings, just 2 and they wear me out so.
  • Dirty Projectors: Bitte Orca - “Cannibal Resource”
  • Guido Möbius: Gebirge
  • Andrew Bird: Noble Beast (2008) – “Effigy”, “Tenuousness”
  • Andrew Bird: Fitz and the Dizzyspells EP
  • Dälek: Gutter Tactics - 1 listen
  • Alva Noto: Xerrox, Vol. 2 - sounds like a modern Irrlicht, sometimes literally.
  • Moonswift: Moonswift
  • Billy Bao: May 08
  • Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions: Through The Devil Softly - i am a fan of Hope Sandoval
  • Lisa Germano: Magic Neighbor - this is nothing special for the casual fan, but I love singer/songwriters, and Lisa Germano is probably 2nd only to Bob Dylan on my scale of personal importance, and Bob Dylan is de facto my favorite, so she ranks very high on my list: I am too partial to her.
  • Hexlove: Piją z Bogiem
  • The Lickets: They Turned Our Desert Into Fire
  • The Lickets: Her Name Came On Arrows
  • Church of Misery: Houses of the Unholy
  • Legion of Two: Riffs
  • Dan Deacon: Bromst
  • The Fiery Furnaces: I’m Going Away - more straight forward songs that do no stand-out, without the quirks of their previous albums nor as good.
  • Blues Control: Local Flavor
  • Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavilion (2008)
  • Todd: Big Ripper
  • Andy Robbins: Red Sun Lines
  • Dreamcolour: Spiritual Celebration - jazz
  • Magma: Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré

  • Felix: You Are The One I Pick
  • Black Flowers: I Grew From A Stone To A Statue
  • Hildur Guðnadóttir: Without Sinking - classical
  • Blackout Beach: Skin Of Evil (2008) - “The Whistle”
  • Jack With One Eye: The Bad Sleep Well - shoegaze revival
  • Bat For Lashes: Two Suns - barely
  • Fever Ray: Fever Ray (2008)
  • Up-Tight: The Beginning of the End (2009) -
tribal drumming, with maracas and a farely predictable spaced out guitar on “Our Own Portrait” is neat, as it all decends into a miniature maelstrom of psychedelia – nothing like “Third Stone From The Sun” (10/10, whereas this song is more like a 5/10, but enjoyable). “A Song for Your Pain” starts out somber like many Les Rallizes Denudes pieces, or “Mandrax Town” by White Heaven, and has an effervescing space guitar interlude between languid (Japanese) singing – not great, but enjoyable like the first track to a lesser degree. A buzzing enters “Distriction” into the second side of the LP as other sounds find their way into the foreground; as the noise picks up, the cymbals begin to creep in the background before the amplifiers are set on fire and a guitar born from the destruction, immersed in feedback pierces through with some sparse drums before it is all over. “The Beginning of the End” is another languid Japanese ballad with a somber beat and sparse echoing guitar, with, again, lethargic guitar-feedback interlude, and an even more blazen finale than anything else that can be found on the album. The album never really takes off, but it never really sinks either. It breaks the threshold of what I would consider a basement level Good album to be – Good does not mean GO GET THIS NOW, it means I COULD listen to this again, on purpose, and without annoyance. Les Rallizes Denudes did it MUCH better, as did Keiji Haino, who this band have clearly heard many times over (the last few minutes of the record screams Rallizes’s influence).

  • Florence and The Machine: Lungs
  • The Pains of Being Pure At Heart: The Pains of Being Pure At Heart
  • The Necks: Silverwater - reminds me a lot of Miles Davis’s In A Silent Way - the album is very mild.
  • The Dead Weather: Horehound
  • Circulatory System: Signal Morning
  • The Pains of Being Pure At Heart: Higher Than The Stars EP
  • Woods: Songs of Shame
  • Barry Chabala: An Unrhymed Chord (For 25 Acoustic Guitars) - hmmmm, sound? the absence is better than most everyone below…:-(
  • Phoenix: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
  • Dan Melchior und das Menace: Thank You Very Much - nice little English (garage?) rock album, similar (for name sake) to The Black Lips whose album 200 Million Thousand failed to be as interesting as this album can be at times. the prevailing theme is anxiety from it’s opener “O! Anxiety” to “Alien American” & “Club Frills” with the calm instrumental “Soiled Clown Blues” all seeping into dreams with “Blue Tentacles”, and some others. There is no amazing new musical idea or perfection of an older idea – the singer imitates the Public Image Ltd. Johnny Rotten in inflection and phrasing; the instruments are just guitar (acoustic and electric), bass, drums, keyboards, and the terrifyingly UNORIGINAL and downright annoying use of over processing the vocals like what the Strokes do, not the way Gibby Haynes does on Butthole Surfers songs – and, yes! there is an enormous difference between the two approaches to vocalization.

  • Mount Kimbie: Maybes EP
  • Blank Dogs: Songs For Under And Under Dogs
  • Great Lake Swimmers: Lost Channels
  • Wardruna: Runaljod – Gap Var Ginnunga
  • The Hunches: Exit Dreams
  • Heartless Bastards: The Mountain - “The Mountain”
  • Jackie-O Motherfucker: Freedomland (2006) - these are better compositions than i am used to hearing from newer releases, but the recording is so dull and fuzzy that it may all be an illusion. i like the last 3 songs though, with moments of delicate insanity tickling my ears a bit. “Shukran” fails to capitalize on the ambience of the first 6 minutes when it tries to kick it into gear and instead it just sputters and putters along until the 9th minute where they turn on some effects on the guitars, and ends with the singer thanking inanimate objects with no zeal or much of anything worth revisiting. “Pull My Daisy” is a cuter, longer piece. and the finale with “Lord Of The Underpass”, the potential is probably reached, min for min the best piece as it continues the rhythms of the previous “Ghost Rider” but melts it down into a séance of a deranged girlie voice searching until the halfway mark the band begins its march home – this is the track that could have been SPECIAL, instead it is really really good. this low rating may be a product of a very shitty live recording – as i have read (and clearly not listened to) is a common theme for the band. i wish they would revise this protocol for the better of their own art – no more people are going to buy it than usual, but for those who do may have something worth holding onto.
  • Pelt: A Stone for Angus MacLise
  • The Flaming Lips: Embryonic
  • Handsome Furs: Face Control
  • maudlin of the Well: Part the Second
  • A.C. Newman: Get Guilty
  • MV & EE With The Golden Road: Drone Trailer - “Anyway” - Drone Trailer is born from the cavernous hippie epoch with a strong Neil Young odor in rhythm and vernacular. the songs are mostly built from jam concepts (“Weatherhead Hollow”) and acoustic ballads (“The Hungry Stones”, “Drone Trailer” & “Twitchin’”) with the two bookends (“Anyway” & “Huna Cosm”) not only juxtaposing themselves but the rest of the album. “Anyway” is a cute distorted pop song with a mild driving guitar and “Huna Cosm” is a spacey ethereal guitar/effect swells song that sucks any life the record had before, but not horrible.
  • Wavves: Wavvves
  • Den Saakaldte: Øl, Mørke Og Depresjon - “Jag ar den fallna” - this is an odd album. some parts are pure death (i want to eat babies) metal, and other parts are extremely quaint, weird. “Øde” and “Gjenspeilingen av Knuste Minner” were goofy, and could have been on a Brian Eno album, whereas “Drikke ens Skal” & “Vandringen” were pure evil. and the finale: “Jag ar den fallna” starts with a saxophone driving along heavily distorted metal guitars before the band just disintegrates into the usual death persona, when halfway it becomes a waltz to the end (for metal that is). and the final bit song “Den Sorgløse Latterens Sang” is another weirdo for a death metal album. this is definitely an album i would not have listened to if it were not for my quest to hear everything that i possibly can from this year (hint: i will not come anywhere close).
