Author Comments:

The list consists only of the books I actually own...

The Catcher in the Rye is just as great as everyone says it is.

I agree - I actually finished reading it some 5-6 days ago. I have to admit that I was awfully skeptical at first - I was actually quite convinced it was overrated, but having read it, I most definitely agree.

My ratings:
Daphne Du Maurier - Rebecca = 5*
Thomas Hardy - Far from the Madding Crowd = 5*
Thomas Hardy - Jude the Obscure = 5*
All are favourites of mine and highly recommended.

My ratings:
American Psycho, Bret Easton Ellis = 2.5
Short Stories, Franz Kafka = 4.5 (Favs: A Hunger Artist, The Great Wall of China, In the Penal Colony, The City Coat of Arms, The Burrow)
Short Stories, Guy de Maupassant = 4 (Favs: Ball of Fat, The Necklace, The Horla (1887 version), Doctor Heraclius Gloss)

I rather agree with your rating of Kafka's short stories, though I've read only a few so far... he has such unique ideas and the way of expressing them.

I have to say I've been kind of skeptical about starting to read American Psycho... what did you particularly dislike/like about it?

I read it in high school. I didn't like the blabla about fashion and other stuffs. Very (too much?) detailed. I guess this is for showing that the main character is superficial, but I find it boring. What I liked is the action, the suspence. I don't remember how much it was gory, but I remember that I took a break because it was too much visual. One particular scene, with a rat and cheese, is still in my mind after those years.

ooh I love Aldous Huxley. Start there!

I adore Huxley too :). I'm currently trying to read as many of his works as possible - so far, I've only read six books. Which one is your favourite?

Brave New World.

Six is an impressive number! They're sort of hard to find; other than BNW, there isn't much choice in the library. Which do you suggest I start with?

My two cents about the list:

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is better if you don’t know the ending, if you don’t know, than never read reviews before go through it.

I “like” The Fall by Camus, but it’s not my style of book in overall, too pessimist.

I don’t agree with everything in The Devil’s Dictionary, but some parts worth the read.

The Character of Rain is really not the best Amélie Nothomb novel if you didn’t read anything else, her earlier works are the better ones. I suggest Fear and Trembling (very Kafka style) and The Stranger Next Door.

I found Maurice ok, but it doesn’t make me feel anything...

She by Haggard was totally my style.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was interesting, but it would have been better if it was a true story like I was thinking it was.

I didn’t like Little Women, too much "mommy is right"...

I love Gogol, even more than the little Dostoievsky I’ve read, but it’s probably just me.

The Bonfire of the Vanities was fun, even is the book is huge, I read it very fastly.

Everybody I know prefer The Hunchback of Notre-Dame over Les Misérables...

I’ve read a lot of Vladimir Nabokov short stories, but only really like one, La Veneziana. It’s about someone that try to enter in a painting, very special.
