Movies I've Seen post-July 2002

  • Ocean's Eleven- great movie. very entertaining, especially the dialogue. which, i feel, sometimes makes or breaks a movie. saw this for the first time a few weeks before i saw The Score. not a good idea. somehow ruined the score for me. bought this on dvd, plan on seeing it again sometime.
  • K-19: The Widowmaker- starts off a bit slow for my tastes, and hardly picks up. the entire soviet military apparently sounds like harrison ford in star wars (if he had a head cold). definitely a specialized movie. the girlfriend liked it, largely due to her interest in submarines. (i have a strange girlfriend, what can i say...)
  • Master of Disguise- rent it. i've seen 57 (yes, 57) bad reviews for this movie, and i'd have to say that they're well-founded in their opinion. maybe a bit harsh, but respectable. this is not going to win any awards, with a possible exception of a razzie. the movie is less than 70 minutes long, and while it is slightly unbearable for that length, the end credit outtakes show that it could have been extended to a decent length, or edited to have more laughs per minute. the turtle scene is just as funny as it looks, and the movie relies on juvenile humor such as that for the most part. that's what makes it so lovable. the good scenes could be cut down to a 30-minute special on nickelodeon and serve just as good of a purpose.
  • L.A. Confidential- i was told that this should have won best picture, but was defeated by titanic. while i was already sure that titanic was, at the highest, 3rd most-deserving of the nominees, i was a bit skeptical that this flick would be better than both Good Will Hunting and As Good As It Gets. i was proven wrong. complicated plot that never seems to be too confusing, with some amazing acting, and of course, my stunner, the dialogue. kim basinger especially does well as a prostitute (who'd have thought?), and her lines are very memorable. and russell crowe in a role that i could tolerate? never saw that coming! i say it was robbed of the oscar.
  • A Walk to Remember- i saw a good portion of it, maybe 75%, but i don't want to review it, and i don't feel like watching the rest of it, either. the girlfriend wanted to see it.
  • American History X- strikingly different from my expectations. i thought it would involve much more academic teaching of nazi/prejudice history, but instead it was mostly the main characters saying "we hate blacks". i suppose i need to see it again, but my first impression was one of slight disappointment. the ending was somewhat unexpected, but i'm sure around 20-30% of critics saw it coming. the constant "they're looking for me" should have been a clue, but it goes to show that i shouldn't get so arrogant in guessing the endings of movies. ed norton in one of his ok performances. i think i'm becoming a bigger ed norton fan by the movie.

Next on the list: corky romano, lord of the rings, the godfather trilogy.

Another "movies I've seen" list with comments - I love these. My only comment on your first entry is that I think The Score was ruined well before you saw Ocean's Eleven. Looking forward to following this list.

granted, that comment about the score may be true. i did enjoy it, though. edward norton is one of my favorites (fight club being in my top 10 favorite movies).

Edward Norton is a favorite of mine as well. I thought he was the highlight of The Score, acting-wise. I'm sure the movie suffered in my eyes because my expectations were so high.
