Author Comments:

As much as I abhor much of the Oscar prognastication that goes on I thought I'd take a stab at what I think will constitute the nominees come February 12th.

For my own benefit I've listed all those contestants I think have a shot, I've italicized the films or roles I've yet to see and bolded what I currently think will be nominated.

The plan is to have each Nomination Category pared down or padded out to 5 by the time the nominees are announced.

Who's comin' with me?

2/12/2002
OK, I have highlighted in yellow the eventual nominees and put a strike through nominees I didn't have on my possible nominees list.

I'm with ya on this. I'll be posting my predictions soon. Let's see if they line up.

Okey-Dokey! Now that the nominations are in I went through and highlighted in yellow what got nominated.

If you count all of the categories that I picked nominees in, this is everything except for Best Documentary, Short Subject and Best Short Film, Animated and Best Short Film, Live Action, then I was 66/96 or 68.75% correct.

My best category was Best Music, Song where I got 5 out of 5 but I relied heavily on other prognostication sites for those. Of the categories that were all me my best categories were Best Picture (4 of 5), Best Actor (4 of 5), Best Actress (5 of 5), Best Writing, Original Screenplay (4 of 5), Best Cinematography (4 or 5), Best Editing (4 of 5) and Best Effects, Visual Effects (3 of 3).

If you choose just the major categories, Picture, Director, Acting Categories, Editing, Cinematoraphy and Writing Categories, I was 37 of 50 or 74%.

I've come to the conclusion that of the major awards the Supporting Actor and Actress are the hardest to call.

I'm pretty comfortable with all of the Academy's choices in a general sense (given their past track record) but the omission of Baz Luhrmann as Best Director is big. Also, Tony Shalhoub being passed over as Best Supporting Actor when Ethan Hawke got a nomination is a minor travesty.

Great job!

Were you like me? Did you go with Memento more out of hope than logic?

At least most of the major nominations were noteworthy films, even if a few weren't and many great (arguably better) films were largely overlooked.

But Naomi Watts was flat out robbed, I tell ya'!

Shalom, y'all!

> Were you like me? Did you go with Memento more > out of hope than logic?

I think it was logic. I really thought it had a legitimate chance at winning best picture. Both In The Bedroom and Memento were small films and could have easily traded places.

AFA Naomi Watts goes I haven't seen Mulholland Drive so I can't vouch for the robbery but I've heard good things all around about her performance.

I basically picked what I thought the Academy would choose not what is the best of the year in film. I hope that was clear.

You were perfectly clear indeed. When guessing at the Oscars, I noticed that most of my friend frequent Oscarwatch.com. Usually, their guesses are identical, so they end up getting the same ones right. Because of this, I usually go out on a limb with several each year, just to make things fun. When I do, I usually try to be optimistic and pick a few I really hope may win and that actually have half a chance at doing just that. This year, with the noms, I went with Memento and Watts. Ah, I should have ran with Lynch...

I was only curious if you did anything likewise.

Again, great job!

Shalom, y'all!

I looked at OscarWatch to get a general idea for some of the more obscure categories. More than anything I just wanted to make sure that I had remember all of the possible nominees to choose from when I made my picks.

I like to go a little out on a limb as well. For me Memento as Best Picture, Guy Pearce as Best Actor and Renée Zellweger as Best Actor were my limb picks.
