- [73] Funny Games U.S. (2007, Michael Haneke) ~ Give up your neighbors to save yourselves. Whatever happened to good ole adrenalin? These are just two of the thoughts that went through my head while watching this movie. In spite of the fact that those two sentences could be read together as the natural progression of one thought that's really not how I mean them. The first sentence "Give up your neighbors to save yourselves" refers to one possible theme of the movie from a meta-movie point of view. I don't know if it was intentional on Haneke's part. Picture the events that take place in the movie as one link in a chain. There's a family in the film who have to deal with Peter and Paul prior to passing them off to Ann and George. That link in the chain proceeds the events in the movie. At the end of the film Ann and George pass Peter and Paul off to the next family by involving them when they were initially being terrorized. Does this chain go on forever as Peter and Paul work their way around the harbor? Why doesn't any one family stop what is occurring by basically calling Peter and Paul's bluff right in front of the next family in the chain? Because they are trying to save their own ass. They really think that there's a chance that they can talk or finagle their way out of it and by tipping off the next family they would be sealing their own fate. They think they have control of an uncontrollable situation. (←)

- [57] The Invasion (2007, Oliver Hirschbiegel) ~ Yeah. I'm gonna need you to not make this movie. OK? I'm sure Hirschbiegel would've Smithee'd this thing if he knew more about Hollywood. Joel Silver you should be ashamed of yourself in letting a good international director be smacked around in his U.S. film debut. This happens far too often. I'm betting Hirschbiegel's original cut was good but somebody had to have an action movie. Jeffrey Wright easily the best thing in the movie. Wait a second. That was Roger Rees? Holy shit, Roger Rees rocks. Roger Rees easily the best thing this movie, with Jeffrey Wright a very close second. And the chia pet automobile of humans was good. On second thought I've changed my mind. I loved this movie. Nah, I still hated it. (←)

- [54] Wild Hogs (2007, Walt Becker)
- [53] 30 Days of Night (2007, David Slade) ~ Geez, what the input of an even-handed screenwriter before shooting and a steady-handed editor afterwards could have done for this movie. This could've easily been a modern-day remote isolation/vampire classic but instead it's just a mishmash of isolated scenes stitched together with no real attention to pacing or tension and with the focus of the film meandering from one plot point to the next. Which is sad, really, because all of the elements of greatness were there. C'mon, Danny Huston as a vampire? Casting genius, I say! (←)
