Films: Watched in 2006

  1. (12.25) [74] The Family Stone (2005, Thomas Bezucha) [on demand; home] ~ What a great movie. I did think it was going to be decent, at minimum, but it was so much better than that.
  2. (12.14) [58] The Da Vinci Code (2006, Ron Howard) [dvd; home] ~ Violated one of my basic premises of filmmaking: making a good movie comes before being faithful to your source material. But not the debacle I anticipated by a long shot.
  3. (12.11) [60] 16 Blocks (2006, Richard Donner) [dvd; home] ~ Filmmaking 101 with a tender-hearted subplot.
  4. (12.10) [75] Walk the Line (2005, James Mangold) [dvr; home]
  5. (12.07) [76] Match Point (2005, Woody Allen) [dvr; home] ~ Could possibly be the best film that Woody Allen has ever made.
  6. (12.03) [70] The Prestige (2006, Christopher Nolan) [film; amc lennox, theater 6] ~ I'm no dummy and I understood everything that was supposed to take place in this movie but I still want to see it again before I make my final decision regarding its quality. I have a sinking feeling that it seems better than it actually is.
  7. (11.28) [61] The Jacket (2005, John Maybury) [dvr; home]
  8. (11.23) [77] Mission: Impossible III (2006, J.J. Abrams) [dvd; in-laws] ~ So much better than the first two M:I's. If given the wakedness I could've easily watched this again immediately after finishing it.
  9. (11.16) [75] Munich (2005, Steven Spielberg) [dvd; home]
  10. (11.08) [66] The Woods (2006, Lucky McKee) [dvd; home]
  11. (11.05) [80] Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006, Larry Charles) [film; rave motion pictures polaris 18, theater 9] ~ One of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Sacha Baron Cohen deserves a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in this movie. Seriously.
  12. (11.03) [63] Danny the Dog (2005, Louis Leterrier) (aka Unleashed) [cable; home]
  13. (10.31) [69] Three... Extremes (2004, Fruit Chan, Takashi Miike and Chan-wook Park) [dvd; home]
  14. (10.31) [69] Box (2004, Takashi Miike) [dvd; home]
  15. (10.30) [72] Cut (2004, Chan-wook Park) [dvd; home]
  16. (10.29) [65] Dumplings (2004, Fruit Chan) [dvd; home]
  17. (10.26) [66] Slither (2006, James Gunn) [dvd; home] ~

Where is the Mr. Pibb? I told your secretary to pack Mr. Pibb. It's the only Coke I like. Goddamn Brenda exploding like a water balloon and worms driving my friends around like they're goddamn skin-cars. People are spitting acid at me, turning you into cottage cheese, and now there's no fucking goddamn Mr. Pibb!?
  18. (10.21) [??] Employee of the Month (2006, Greg Coolidge) [film; marcus cinemas crosswoods, theater 10] ~ I'm probably one of the only 40-year olds on the planet who likes Dane Cook. Contrary to common belief he is actually very funny.
  19. (10.18) [59] Feast (2005, John Gulager) [dvd; home] ~ Clearly Gulager can direct. So why isn't anyone letting him make more movies?
  20. (10.13) [73] A History of Violence (2005, David Cronenberg) [dvd; home] ~ His story of violence leaves no mystery about violence. David Cronenberg points an unblinking lens at violence and its blowback.
  21. (10.13) [77] Lady Vengeance (2005, Chan-wook Park) [dvd; home] ~ Chan-wook Park really hits his filmmaking stride in Lady Vengeance. I wasn't expecting this to be the best entry in his "vengeance" trilogy but it beats out Oldboy by a slim margin. The writing, direction, performances, editing and cinematography were uniformly great. A nice capstone to the trilogy as a whole.
  22. (10.10) [58] The Matador (2005, Richard Shepard) [dvd; home] ~ Solid but ultimately pointless film which loses way too much steam before the final third of the movie.
  23. (10.05) [73] The Proposition (2005, John Hillcoat) [dvd; home] ~ Slow-paced, laconic movie "punch"-uated with horrific, realistic violence which shocked me as much as anything in Gaspar Noe's Irréversible. So gritty I almost showered afterwards. Recommended if you like

hearing someone head-kicked to death and seeing the aftermath
    . Not for the squeamish.
  24. (10.02) [74] Carandiru (2003, Hector Babenco) [dvd; home] ~ Those Brazilian filmmakers sure do have a flair for the many-storied, multi-charactered, sprawling opuses.
  25. (09.30) [72] Bad Education (2004, Pedro Almodóvar) [dvd; home] ~ Can't quite figure out why this was rated NC-17.
    Spoiler: Highlight to view
    Does blunt homosexuality = NC-17
? I don't think there was anything in it I haven't seen in other R-rated movies.

Except in the other films it was a man and a woman
    .
  26. (09.28) [76] Hard Candy (2005, David Slade) [dvd; home] ~ Another good, disturbing movie that I might hesitate to recommend. See also, Feed (2005). Not quite as grotesque as Feed, however.
  27. (09.21) [74] The Memory of a Killer (2003, Erik Van Looy) [dvd; home] ~ Could've easily been a couple of points higher if the ending didn't drag on for so long. I was ready for this to be over 15 minutes before it was.
  28. (09.20) [67] Lucky Number Slevin (2006, Paul McGuigan) [dvd; home] ~ You've heard of dueling banjos? Watch Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley play dueling psychos.
  29. (09.15) [73] Memories of Murder (2003, Joon-ho Bong) [dvd; home] ~ If Oldboy wasn't so audacious this would easily be the best South Korean film of 2003 that I've seen.
  30. (09.13) [69] The Machinist (2004, Brad Anderson) [dvd; home]
  31. (09.12) [62] District B13 (2004, Pierre Morel) [dvd; home] ~ Easily a '90' if rated strictly on action, stunts and the physicality of the 2 lead actors.
  32. (09.06) [74] Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005, Shane Black) [dvd; home] ~ Finally a movie that's supposed to have crackling dialogue and be fun to watch that actually has crackling dialogue and is fun to watch.
  33. (09.04) [55] The Hills Have Eyes (2006, Alexandre Aja) [dvd; home] ~ I've heard this is better than the original. The original must be pretty bad.
  34. (08.29) [58] Feed (2005, Brett Leonard) [dvd; home] ~ Probably one of the best movies I've seen that I could never (in good conscience) recommend anyone watch.
