Author Comments:

Films watched for the first time are highlighted in yellow. If I've written up a few thoughts about a film the title is in bold. Click on More to see what I wrote.

Well done Dan, you beat me to the punch in getting the first "Seen in 2003" list up. :-) I notice with a pair of sixes that you're not off to nearly as strong a start as you had in 2002. Looks like my first entry of 2003 is going to be the HBO movie Conspiracy, unless I rewatch a Christmas gift (Tombstone or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

Love the new format Dan! And you know I'm happy to see you start reviewing movies again, as I think you've got a knack for it. I liked Shanghai Noon quite a bit, but I was worried for the sequel. Thanks for putting some of those worries to rest. I'll be checking this list regularly (rather, I'll continue checking this list regularly :-).

Why, thanks, Jim, for both the format and the "knack" comments. I want to have comments for all of my movies, it's just that I am so busy and regardless of how decent my finished comments seem it's like pulling teeth for me to get the thoughts out of my brain. But I'm going to try (as I've said many times before but hopefully I can stick to it) to do better.

Well, it seems that "Old School" is faring surprisingly well! I was so surprised to see it being the only movie that was deemed "fresh" on rottentomatoes.com from last weekend (whereas "Dark Blue", "Gods and Generals", and "The Life of David Gale" were rotten). I've generally been avoiding most of the brainless, raunchy college / high school movies lately, but maybe this one will be entertaining!

Yes, AJ. I quite enjoyed Old School. It plays in the "grand" tradition of other classic comedies of questionable taste.

Ooh, an 8! Can I cajole a review of City of God out of you?

I'll second that request. That film still has yet to poke its head in Tulsa. It looks great to me. Many are still scratching their heads as to how it evaded an Oscar nom.

I hear The Man Without a Past is interesting also, and as for Hero, gee, I haven't heard a thing about that one yet. ;)

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I want to see it again before I post my review. Hopefully next weekend as it has yet to open "for real" in Columbus yet. I got lucky and saw a sneak preview.

That's too bad about Femme Fatale. I have a number of friends who swear it is quite good and one of the most over-looked films of last year. I'd love to see another great De Palma film, but I am suspicious, and your rating makes me more so.

Thanks!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I posted some thoughts about it.

I think DePalma has another great film in him. Maybe even two. But I don't think this is the way to go about it.

He needs to quit writing his own stuff.

How does X2 compare to the first in your mind?

I watched the original a few weeks ago in anticipation of this one and I couldn't believe how slow some parts were. It almost bordered on boring at points. I think I'm going to have to adjust my rating for it down to a 5.

To my mind X2 is easily better than the first. I don't see how anyone could say that it isn't better. But even the 2nd one still isn't matching the potential that I think X-Men movies have. I've been (slowly) working on some comments about the film which I hope to post before the end of the weekend.

May I respectfully request a Reloaded review?

I'll see what I can do, Jim! :-) Although I sort of feel a 2nd viewing is in order before I can really do it justice. Do you plan on seeing it theatrically?

Okay, I can wait for your 2nd viewing. :-) I do plan on seeing it theatrically, but I might not get to it for a couple weeks.

As long as I'm making respectful requests, can I ping you again with a Hero review request?

That's a very reasonable request, Jim! :-) I want to go see The Matrix Reloaded (again) tomorrow and maybe I can fit in a rewatch of Hero tomorrow night so then I can review both of them on Sunday. No promises, but I'll do the best I can.

Excellent! In addition to being eager for your Hero review, I'm particularly keen to hear if Reloaded holds up under a second viewing. Could be a very nice Monday morning for me... :-)

I haven't had a chance to rewatch The Matrix Reloaded or Hero yet but Reloaded is playing at an IMAX theatre here in town. I actually ducked in and watched the first 10 minutes in IMAX yesterday before going to see The Hulk. I've decided that my 2nd viewing of Reloaded is definitely going to be in IMAX if I can manage it.

Glad to see you liked 28 Days Later! I'm really looking forward to that one, albeit on DVD.

AMC Easton 30?! Wow. Talk about a multiplex. That is 30 screens, right?

Yep! And it's also probably one of my least favorite places to see movies in Columbus. Only used if I'm in the neighborhood and starving for entertainment. They have 30 screens but right now they're only showing 19 films because they have 2 screen showing the same film.

This may seem like a silly question, but why'd you decide to see The Rundown over Once Upon a Time in Mexico? Of course, I'm assuming it's playing in a theater near you.

Actually, "The Rundown" got surprisingly good reviews. Especially for a movie starring a man whose first name is "The."

Alrighty, it's now on my "to see" list, but I'm waiting for DVD. I'm hoping to sneak out and catch OUaTiM in theaters though.

I found the title of "Don't Look Now II: I'm Still Not Looking" very amusing, so I tried to look it up on the IMDB... but as you've probably noticed since you didn't link to it, there's no page for it. Why is that? Is it just really obscure or something?

Saturday was the 24 Hour Horror Marathon at Studio 35 here in Columbus, Ohio. Here's the schedule of festivities. There was a "Special Quarantine Training Film" (in the spirit of the Zombie theme) shown after George Romero did his Q+A, and before the feature was shown the whole audience had to stand up and take a pledge that if anyone asked what the mystery special feature was we had to tell them "Don't Look Now II: I'm Still Not Looking". But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be easy to figure out. The film that we watched before George was Night of the Living Dead. So the film that we watched after George was...? This mystery film played while he signed autographs in the lobby. He stayed until well after midnight signing autographs.

With Bruce Campbell last year and George Romero this year, I'm starting to realize how many genuinely nice people there are in the movie industry. George Romero was completely approachable. I think he would've spoken to anybody concerning just about anything. He lives in Pittsburgh and drove in to town with his wife Chris. I overheard one of the organizers say that they had offered to fly them in but he wanted to drive. Pittsburgh is about 3 hours from Columbus.

During his Q+A he mentioned that after leaving the marathon he and his wife were going to drive down to Memphis to see Asia Argento and the new film she was making there. George has worked with Dario Argento, acclaimed Italian horror director and father of Asia, before. He also good things to say about Stephen King. He's supposed to be working on a film version of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon with "Steve" as he called him.

Unfortunately I only had the stamina to do the first 12 hours of the marathon. Somebody who was at the marathon sent a news item into AICN which you can read here.

Nice writeup of the marathon Dan, very enjoyable. I liked your recap from last year too. Hey, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Versus. Somehow that movie ended up on my "to see" list, but I can't for the life of me remember how.

Gotcha. Sounds like a rollicking good time!
