I haven't even read it, but wouldn't it be great if Hollywood made a big budget adaptation of The Reality Dysfunction and its sequels with a solid writer and director behind it? If the movies were actually good, they could grow up to be Star Wars killers. I desperately want Star Wars killers.
I think some of the truly great science fiction films have yet to be made. There is such good source material out there in the sci-fi genre which has never really been done right.
When I come across a book, i.e. read, that I feel would make a great movie given good writing, directing, acting and effects, I usually put it here. All of the sci-fi on that list has the potential to be an excellent movie.
BTW, I finally ended up reading that whole 6 book series and was truly epic and very, very good.
Well, youre definitely introducing me to some newer authors (I generally aim my attentions at much older ones)
You seem to be more into cyberpunk though and Im not really into it. I figured since I tried the epitome of cyberpunk already (Neuromancer and Snow Crash) and I didna like, then I must not like cyberpunk. Other than that and some of the fantasy, youve got quite a few interesting "leads" for me to follow.
I'll definitely be checking out Metzger, Cramer, Denton, Michael Marshall Smith, and Levinson. Im also going to give Quarantine a shot, but I fear that Egan's writing may be too scientifical for my taste...
Thanks!
I saw from your Goodreads site that you are currently reading Doomsday Book. I liked that book quite a bit.
I'm actually not much of a Cyberpunk reader anymore. I was maybe 20 years ago. The whole genre sort of grew stale for me.
Of the 3 Metzger books I think his best is Picoverse followed by Quad World. Quad World is more of a weird fantasy book then science fiction.
John Cramer is the father of science fiction editor Kathryn Cramer and is a physicist by trade. Both of his books are immensely readable.
If I were going to start with Paul Levinson I'd probably read The Silk Code first.
Greg Egan's writing is pretty scientific but if I recall Quarantine isn't too heavy on the science. He also uses a very interesting plot device which I've never seen used by another author. I've not read anyone mention it in any reviews of Quarantine so I'm wondering if I'm the only person who picked up on it or if it was my imagination. I'd be interested in discussing it with another person who has read the book.
Others books I can recommend to you from my "have read" list are...
Horizons by Mary Rosenblum (she is a really terrific writer)
Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds (all of his books are uniformly good)
Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan (it's not as cyberpunky as it sounds)
Crystal Rain by Tobias Buckell
The Atrocity Archive by Charles Stross
Old Man's War by John Scalzi (not as military as it sounds)
Titan by John Varley
Gateway by Frederik Pohl
and a ton of others but I'll stop there.
It's nice meeting a kindred reading spirit.
SO when you say "both" of John Cramer's books, youre saying that third book listed on Goodreads is definitely NOT him right? Its some sort of elves/wizards kinda fantasy that looks self-published. I know it cant be him, but I wanted to make sure before I change the author's name over.
Now youve got my interest piqued on Quarantine. I must seek that out. Ive got 7 unread books at home (some ILLs) and more on the way. I added a new category on goodreads entitled 'reading next'. Granted it could always change unexpextedly, but it will show what I intend to read next at this very moment LOL.
Gonna try and add your other recommendations to my list. I already have Stross and Pohl on my list and I keep *considering* that Scalzi work, but I just wasnt sure...you might have pushed me over the edge on that one...
Oh, and I have notes posted about Doomsday book as I am getting through it. So far so good although it took forever to get going.
Yes, I'm 99.99% sure that The Siege of Haven, the self-published book, is not him. His books are Twistor and Einstein's Bridge.
Let me know if you end up reading Quarantine some day. I'd be interested in seeing if you pick up on his literary device.
Charles Stross' stuff is very weird and I haven't quite been able to get into his science fiction yet. But The Atrocity Archives is more of an IT Department meets The Call of Cthulu sort of series. If you like it he has another book called The Jennifer Morgue with some of the same characters.
