Favourite Classical Pieces I Have Played (in no particular order)

Tags:
  • Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique - witches!
  • Cage: Third Construction - because you can't have a really good percussion ensemble piece if there's no conch shell. And also because when it's done right, it's sublime.
  • Ravel: Bolero - I know. Shut up.
  • Rosauro: Marimba Concerto - Also the Vibe Concerto, but Marimba comes out on top due to greater ability to stick in your mind for YEARS.
  • Tchaikovsky: Symphony no.4 - it's all about the cymbals.
  • Shostakovich: Symphony no.10 - When Snare Drums Attack!
  • Sondheim: Into the Woods (the entire thing. Percussion part rather than drum kit. Utterly fabulous, especially if the princes are all in tights...)

c'mon, didn't you ever get to play the "whip" sound in Sleigh Ride? That's got to be a winner ...

personally, I played string bass, and must say that Pachelbel's Canon in D (8 notes repeated ad nauseum) and Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Danse Chinoise (can you say 64 B-flat's?) were the most boring bass parts ever. Favorites are Scheherazade mvmt. 2 and Capriccio Espagnol, mvmt. 4 and 5. Also love Rhapsody in Blue.
