Author Comments:

Eleven of the films were listed in two different genres so there are actually only 489 films here. Only English language films before 2008 were considered.

I combined all the genres into one alphabetized list.

Some of their inclusions are downright puzzling. Monster House? Ali? Legally Blonde?

Well, this is a combination of 50 nominees for each of 10 genres, including animation, sports, and romantic comedy. And they often like to include a few token recent films that are reasonably well-reviewed, but hell, I don't know that I could come up with 50 great American animated films or 50 great American sports films, so I can understand why Monster House and Ali would sneak in. There are probably more great American romantic comedies, but hey, Legally Blonde definitely has a following.

Ah, I see. Still, I can't understand Ali being here at all; that movie was quite shit.

How is Fargo not here?

Because the campy Fantastic Voyage took its place?

You're forgetting Rain Man.

I have not forgotten anything.
This is a list compiled by "experts". Note in a comment above how the list was created. 50 films from each of 10 categories. So films such as AI Artificial Intelligence and Fantastic Voyage are here to fill out the 50 for Sci-Fi. They have to be American Films, so that takes out of consideration Nosferatu, Le Voyage Dans La Lune, and Metropolis. But that also is highly limiting of the other categories. Also, checking the AFI site, they have taken down the T0P 500 list. So maybe they have gotten the message of "you left out too many really excellent films and put in too much camp." I'm also coming to a point wondering how much they charge for different positions such as "We will put you in the top 100 for a $100 contribution to AFI and in the top 50 for a $500 contribution.
