  • These movies are so bad, you'll want to kill yourself!   13 years 13 weeks ago

Yeah, I'll make that clear in the list. I actually really liked "Batman Forever" and at least the Catwoman part in "Batman Returns". The first one I only saw once. Will correct it.

  • Most Rewarding Reads   13 years 13 weeks ago

I have a copy of The Annotated Alice on my "to read" mountain. You've reminded me of it, and I think I'll tackle it after I get off my "how to fix stuff around the house" reading kick.

The Game also belongs on your "Underrated Movies" list, if you don't mind me saying so. It fared even more poorly than Fight Club critically and monetarily (I think).

I feel a twinge of pride at only having seen two of these movies (Batman and Robin and Barb Wire); both were miserable. But I'm surprised that you think Batman and Robin is the best of the Batman movies ("not as bad as the others") - I'd peg it as the worse. O wait . . . Did you mean not as bad as the other movies on your list?

  • movies everyone else seemed to like but I didn't...   13 years 13 weeks ago

I'm not sure I'd ever be able to get beyond being horrified by the violence. I can't stand watching it, just squeamish I guess.

  • Underrated Movies - either bad reviews or no sales   13 years 13 weeks ago

I've read a little Nin and tried to read some Miller. Their writing styles didn't grab me for some reason, so I haven't read any more.

    "Fix smiley support". Got it.

Actually, it looks okay here, so I'm going to go ahead and blame the company that created your browser. You using IE?

Funny anecdote! I've heard stories from people who said this movie led to actual orgies! Pretty crazy stuff. Out of curiosity, have you read any Nin or Miller or do you just appreciate the movie by itself? I've rarely met people who like the movie without having read its authors.

As to Reservoir Dogs, I might give it one or two more watches before condemning it. This was a definite grow on me movie, and the first few times I watched it out of blind devotion to Tarantino. But after the third or fourth I realized the depth of the characters, and the utter coolness of some of the less flashy scenes dawned on me. I. E. Tim Roth telling the anecdote and how the camera switches from the roof-top, to the table, to the mythical restroom.

Thank you for your comments and I totally agree. I would put "Out of Sight" on, except that around here people do appreciate it. As to "The Limey" I haven't seen it yet, but am itching to. I checked out your movie list and will definitely be giving a few of them a try soon! Thanks!

As to movies Julianne Moore shouldn't have done... Nine Months? That was bad.

  • Wah-hoo! Welcome to the new version of The   13 years 13 weeks ago

    Okay, here's what's new:

    • Amazon.com integration: When you view a list, you will now see a little purple arrow next to each list item. By clicking on this arrow, you will be able to see stuff at Amazon related to the item that you can buy. If you do buy something, The Listology gets a small percentage of the sale. I'm hoping this will cover some of my costs in keeping the site going (The Listology is on a colocated server to keep things nice and speedy - the downside is that it's fairly expensive). I'm pleased with the way the integration came out . . . It's not nearly as intrusive as banner ads (IMO), and it's actually kinda fun to see what Amazon comes up with in certain cases (for example, try the Groundhog Day link on this list).

    • I've finally added a checkbox to the login screen that allows you to stay logged in indefinitely.

    • Another long-overdue change: When you are posting a comment, you can see what you are posting about right on the same screen. This tries to be smart. If you are replying to comment, it will display the original comment, but if you are starting a new thread, it will display the corresponding list/news item.

    • The user directory now puts a Sneech-like gold star next to users that have been active during the past week. Note that this starts today, so you won't have a star unless you do something from this point on. And you have to keep doing something to keep your star. :-) What qualifies as "something"? You either have to add/update a list, or post a comment.

    • Finally, here's a feature near-and-dear to my heart . . . On the screen that lists all your lists, you will see a star next to those lists that have received comments since the last time the list was saved. I can't tell you how long I've been trying to come up with a good way to implement this. Seems obvious now that it's done.

So there it is! If you have comments or other suggestions, feel free to post them here.

"Henry and June" was indeed fantastic. (I liked "Zero Effect" as well). I wouldn't recommend watching it in public places though. In college we were watching it late at night in a conference room at work on a projection system. A friend walked in right in the middle of a lesbian sex scene. Walked right back out, and then when I saw him later asked what I was doing watching porn at work.

I've not seen most of your others, though I didn't like "The Devil's Advocate."

  • movies with good dance scenes..   13 years 13 weeks ago

Haven't seen Dirty Dancing since junior high, so figured I should probably rewatch it before adding it. I haven't seen She's all that.

I'll put it on my list of movies to check out. (well, mental list at least). Tap's fun to watch.

    Great list of underrated films.
"Zero Effect" is a must see.
I'd like to also suggest "Out of Sight" and "The Limey", both by Steven Soderberg.
I haven't had a chance to see "Fight Club" yet, but "The Game" was unnecessaarily overlooked.
Adn the most underrated film of 1999 was definitely "Eyes Wide Shut". Too many people went into that with too many expectations. Not only are Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman both brilliant, it is filled with emotion and a beautiful story--not too mention it is one of the most stunningly photographed films of all time.

  • My Favorite Albums   13 years 13 weeks ago

I have to confess, I've never listed to that album anywhere except your house. :-) 'Course, that's probably because I don't own it.

  • movies with good dance scenes..   13 years 13 weeks ago

How about "Dirty Dancing"? I know it's cheesy and all, but I like the dancing.
The dance scene in "She's All That" is also good and kind of redeems the whole movie.

That was a pretty spectacular Freudian slip. Congratulations! :-D

  • Favorite Actors/Actresses   13 years 13 weeks ago

If there's no point, why did you look at the list in the first place? Huh?

  • Favorite Actors/Actresses   13 years 13 weeks ago

Yay for Edward Norton Ewan Macgregor and Gary Oldman!!!! I'm in complete agreement on those. Have you checked out "The Pillow Book" (Macgregor) and do you like "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (Oldman)? I think Oldman is the definitive Dracula, and Macgregor is awesome in Pillow Book.

whoah man, that's a lot of movies. By Lolita then Lolita did you mean both Lolitas? Or were you adding emphasis. In my experience people tend not to like both of them, being rabid fans for the other. Myself I am a rabid fan of the 1997 version and believe it captures the book perfectly. And man, Dominique Swain just IS Lolita.

What is with guys liking Sarah Michele Gelar? Man... she actually whined in Premiere magazine about having to kiss a girl for "Cruel Intentions" which she got paid 2 million for. Man. Give me 2 million and I'd kiss a lot of worse people.
