Yep, in order of favorability.

That might be the first 007 favorites list I've seen with Octopussy and Moonraker. Still, you get respect for recognizing the brillance of Goldeneye.

Now, what about favorite 007 songs?

  1. The Spy Who Loved Me
  2. Goldeneye
  3. Goldfinger
  4. For Your Eyes Only
  5. View To A Kill

Ooh, good one!

I have to agree with Goldfinger ("Gooooold-fingaaah!"), The Spy Who Loved Me and View to a Kill (a song which, I believe, singlehandedly saved Duran Duran from filing for unemployment in 1985.

That said, however, for me the hands-down winner for Bond music is Dr No. Oh yes my friend, all that calypso is the perfect cocktail lounge backdrop for a late-night-casino-strange-girls-in-my-bed-Jack-Lord's-hair romp.

The one song I disagree on: For Your Eyes Only. Sheena Easton tried to recreate the soft, sensual groove of Spy Who Loved Me; but as Carly sang, "Nobody does it better".

I also have a bit of affection for Octopussy and Moonraker. I saw them both when I was quite young, and Moonraker in particular is one of the first "grown up" movies I remember going to see with my dad. It's hard to be objective about nostalgia.

BTW, for anybody that's up to the challenge, slipkid71 created a great Bond list titled A Critical Overview of the James Bond Series, With Comments. Very impressive. LBangs got inspired and did his own version (also impressive), Bond, James Bond (22 Films Ranked and Reviewed). Neither list includes Die Another Day, although LBangs has seen and reviewed it, he just hasn't decided where to rank it (as far as I know).

Oh, and while nostalgia gives a boost to Octopussy and Moonraker, I just can't find a way to get on board with The Man with the Golden Gun or The Franchise is not Enough. :-)

There's actually a fairly exhaustive body of theory, criticism and general dissection of the Bond movies available via the golden portal (aka your local library). It's a little intimidating to go beyond the normal "my fave" type operation. I mean, that type of deconstruction requires at least an MA in something obscure.... :D

have you seen the latest bond? Does it make your list?

Amazingly I have not yet seen it. I'll have to remember to Netflix it, right after I return *cough*SGA*cough*.
