Author Comments:

Some of these I've seen before and think worthy enough to rent again. Also, can anyone tell me if "Queen of the Damned" is worth renting? I really enjoyed "Interview With the Vampire" but I've heard mixed emotions about QOTD.

These are the movies on my queue that I've seen before and are renting to see a second time:
Boxing Helena (I forget everything in this movie, though. It's been a long time.)
Pi: Faith in Chaos
9 1/2 Weeks (not completely, though)
Rob Roy
Himalaya
Life is Beautiful
Into the Woods (A long time ago. I remember liking it but forget what it's about.)
Jim Henson's The Storyteller (Watched this show as a kid and really enjoyed it. I remember the Hans the Hedgehog segment.)
Belle de Jour
Caligula (not entirely)
Urotsukidoji: Vol. 1
Shaka Zulu (it's a long mini-series but haven't seen all the episodes.)
Cirque du Soleil: Alegria

Which versions of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Solaris are you wanting to watch? I didn't see the TCM remake, but the original still scare the ever living shit out of me. The original Solaris is outstanding, but its running time and plot density might seem a bit much for some viewers. Clooney's version is admirable.

Yeah, I also loved Secretary. Saw it three times on HBO one day.

I want to see the newest TCM, but Netflix has it on the "to be released" part of my queue. Also, I want to see the version of Solaris with George Clooney. Now that we're bringing this up, I don't believe I've ever seen the original TCM, but if it can scare the living daylights out of me, then I might just fall in love with it! I'm surprised at myself for not having seen this Hooper classic. I think I will also add some Hammer Horror to this queue, too.

Wow, three Secretary's in one day? I thought I was one of the biggest fans! It was certainly a brave movie and it won a lot of people over in spite of the risks it took. I'd be secretary to James Spader any day. ;)

Oh good, another Cirque du Soleil fan! What a marvelous circus. I've seen Saltimbanco, Alegria, Mystere, and Dralion live, and each has been worth every penny (and it can be a lot of pennies to see that show!). Wonderful stuff, and I always come away amazed at what the human body can do. Unfortunately the DVDs are hit-or-miss, and I've heard one of them is downright awful. I can't remember which one, although I learned that through an Amazon review, so I think a little research would reveal the culprit.

At Downtown Disney in Orlando this past October we had the opportunity to see a show, and it was like $75 a ticket for OK seats! I really regret not going. It was a combination of price and time constraints that kept us from going but now I really wish I had gone to see it. Not too long ago they had a Cirque du Soleil marathon on TV. I missed most of that, too! Alegria was a really sweet movie, and what I've seen of some of the shows on t.v. I have been hypnotized at the beauty of the human body in its most artistic form! I also admire that they do not use any animals in their circuses. I never understood a word that was said (being that it was in French) on some of the shows but it doesn't matter. The visuals more than make up for that!

The stinker is definitely not Saltimbanco, which is, I think, my favorite. I wasn't thrilled at all with Journey of Man, but Quidam was pretty good.

Okay, I had to go and do the research. I was only partially right. Cirque DVD of Alegria has gotten mixed reviews on Amazon because it's not a taping of a performance, it's a "film inspired by" sort of deal.

It's a shame it wasn't what some of them had expected because I thought the film was magical! The music was good, too.

This is such a great list, so varied. Are you planning on putting up reviews as you watch them?

Into the Woods is fabulousness itself, both live and taped. I can well understand why you'd want to see it again.

Thanks! Yes, I will put up reviews for all the movies I watch. (Given, of course, that I understand the movies. I've run into a few that were pretty far out.)

Hearing you recall "Into the Woods" is now making me even more excited about seeing it again. I shall bump it up to a higher priority on my queue. I can't wait!

Wow, that's a loaded queue!

I try to keep mine rather pruned. I think I may be the only person in the world on the "2 movies out at once" plan, so if the list is too long, I'd never get through it!

You have some very good movies on here. Enjoy!

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

I probably should sign up for the 2-only deal. I'd be tempted to watch less movies. In the winter I don't mind so much, but in the summer I better slow down!!

2 movies? I didn't even know they had such a deal. How much does that run you? I remember when they used to give you 4 titles for what I now pay for 3.

A friend of mine joined Netflix back when they allowed four movies out for $20. He's been "grandfathered-in" to their new system and is still allowed four movies where as I only get three. I am so jealous!!

Yes. When I first started with Netflix I got 4 for the same price that I pay now for 3. Unfortunately in between the switch from 4 to 3 I had to cancel my account for some months.

We've discussed it on Listology before but I feel that keeping your queue short gives you a better chance at getting movies that are more popular and hence harder to get. Currently the only titles I have in my queue are upcoming titles and the 7 or 8 that I want to see the most. Everything else I have offloaded to My Movies on IMDB. When I used to keep my queue long I'd see lots of Long Wait and Very Long Wait. With 7 or 8 titles on my list I never even see a short wait.

I have 93 movies in my queue with 7 "short waits" and 1 "long wait". The rest are "nows". I think I'm getting better treatment since bumping up to the 5-out plan (which I needed to do since I hang onto the TV series discs so long for exercise purposes (I suppose "needed" is too strong a word)).

I try to arrange my queue so that the ones with "long wait" and "short wait" have the highest priority. "The Story of O," for instance, is my number one movie since it has a "long wait." I'm wondering if it helps to do that? Maybe I need to bump up like Jim and get the 5-movie plan. Although, I already watch WAY too many movies as it is. I hope I'm not such a hermit in the summer, and that this is just a passing obsession!

Actually I think it's a better idea not to put any "Wait" movies at the top of your queue. When Netflix receives a movie back from you it looks at what title is in the top of your queue. If it's "Available Now" it sends it out immediately. If it's a "Wait" movie it waits an amount of time (anywhere from a few hours to a day or so) before deciding that the movie's not going to come back in any time soon and then finally movies down the list to something else.

Another Netflix tidbit involves the release of new films. In the "brick and mortar" DVD and Video rental world new releases come out on Tuesday. I used to work at a 24-hour video rental place and the earliest we were allowed to put new titles out was on Monday night at midnight. But with Netflix if you have a new title in your queue which is set to be released on Tuesday they will sometimes send it to you on Monday. I've had a few situations where I've gotten just released titles in the mail on the Tuesday of their release or the day after.

Ah, that might be why I've noticed they have slowed down in sending my movies out. I sometimes wondered if they have a conspiracy where if you are a new customer they send out movies to you quickly to impress you, and then once they have you hooked they start to slow down. It seems that Netflix now isn't sending out my movies nearly as fast as they had when I first joined. I would send a movie back and they'd have it in two days, now it seems that the movies take anywhere from four to six days to be reported as "returned!" Has anyone else noticed this?

There is something else I noticed about their movies' "wait" status. I'll use "The Story of O" as my example. I had it as number 1 on my list and it always said "long wait." Well, one morning I checked and it still said "long wait," but they still ended up shipping it to me that same day! So I don't think that the "long wait" meant that I in particular had to wait a while to get it, but that globally there is a long list of people waiting to see it. I've been thinking of writing them about these issues and seeing what they have to say about them.

I'd be curious to know if any other Netflix members have noticed any strange goings-on. Luckily, if it turns out that Netflix is playing a game, they don't have a monopoly because Wal-Mart also has DVD rentals online and are cheaper, anyway. I might try them out for a while to see if they're any quicker. I've also heard that Blockbuster is going to be in the market, soon. I would say that Blockbuster really has no choice because they've taken quite a hit financially since Netflix started up. The only solution for them is to become an online competitor.

I find Netflix bogs down from time-to-time (for example, it just took me a week to get a movie), but often it's just temporary and their service returns to what I'm used to. If it doesn't clear up on its own, I complain, and usually things get snappy again soon after.

Well, I sent them a "suggestion" via their web form telling them I had been experiencing major sluggishness from them, and next thing I know I started getting notifications that they were shipping out movies. ha! THEN, they send me an email telling me they're doing a survey, and ask me what day I received a certain movie. Like I write it down in my calendar each time I get a movie. Since I couldn't remember the exact day I received the particular movie they were asking about, I just didn't respond. They should warn me next time so I know to remember the date I receive a movie on. GRRRRR (There, that feels better!)

I don't think the conspiracy has to do with sending out movies quickly as a new customer. I think that when you have less movies in your queue you get movies quicker. When you are a new customer you have less movies in your queue so things are fast. After you've been around awhile your queue grows long and then things slow down. That's why things are slow for you now. And that's why I keep my queue short.

Also, speed has a lot to do with where you are compared to a local Netflix distribution center. I'm in Columbus, Ohio but I'm probably 2 or 3 hours driving away from one here in the Midwest. I know that Jim is fairly close to one as well. I have no idea where you are located geographically though.

Thirdly, if your movie is taking 4 to 6 days to be listed as returned then I would say there's a chance there's an issue at your post office as much as Netflix. I can't imagine Netflix sitting on your movies, not marking them returned even though they have received them. Which means the slow down is before they get them.

I would complain to Netflix about the 4 to 6 day returned issue. If they have an issue in their system then they'll fix it. If things pick up then the issue was with Netflix. If the issue continues then it might be postal.

I think the "wait" level is dependent upon the ratio of how many people are requesting the DVD versus how many copies of the DVD that they own.

I do occasionally have issues. Every once in awhile I'll send a movie back and it'll take extraordinarily long to show up. If you think you've given the DVD a reasonable time to get back and it still hasn't shown up I'd report it on the web site.

I think this has been posted on Listology before, but here's somebody's exhaustive analysis of Netflix behavior.

Oh my! Someone really took a lot of time to put that together. Thanks for sharing the link. It will be interesting to see just what patterns this person has noticed with Netflix. Maybe someone should do one with Wal-Mart, too!

From reading the titles currently on your Netflix queue, I doubt if you'll be able to find many of them through Walmart. If you're really considering trying out an alternative to Netflix you might want to look further than Walmart. There are probably 10 to 15 other DVD Rental by Mail companies here in the U.S. and I'm sure many of them are going to have a better selection than Walmart. I'll see if I can flesh out my list some more.

Thanks! Honestly I had no idea there were other competitors besides Netflix and Wal-Mart. I'll check them out. I do tend to go for the non-mainstream type movies more often than the usual Hollywood films, so I can see where Wal-Mart might not satisfy as much as Netflix. I've even looked up a few weird films that not even Netflix had! (Of course, several weren't on DVD yet, but there were some!)
